I loved the original series, and he's about the last person I could see playing Patrick McGoohan's role.

Yea, I know. One shouldn't typecast an actor because of one role he (or she) played. But whenever I see Sir Ian McKellen thats what immediately comes to mind ... Magneto and his goofy helmet.
