Help me choose a name for my new dog?
Edited on Tue Oct-13-09 09:39 AM by TxRider
I brought home a new dog Sunday, from a big German shepherd rescue that was closing it's doors.

Her name is Monica, but she doesn't respond to it and I don't like three syllable names for dogs, I prefer one or two syllable names that are distinctive sounding to the dog and easy to call out loudly.

Anyway she looks like a full on German Shepherd in mini size, instead of the normal 70lbs, she's about 40lbs. But the only signs of what she is mixed with is a slightly heavier muzzle and a more curly tail that likes to be over her back and her fur is a bit softer in places that a shepherds coat. Well and her smaller size.

She's about 3 my vet says, quite active, very attentive and affectionate, and she's going to be a snap to train.

Anyway my other girl, a full German shepherd rescue is named Hope, she is not altogether pleased with this new addition, but she'll get used to it. She's kinda drugged up as she's having a problem with a paw infection, and she's not feeling so well. She was pretty feral when I got her, she didn't "get" petting and playing, though she's a sucker for attention now. Monica is just over half her size.

Anyway on to the pics!

So what would be a good name do you folks think? Nothing is leaping out at me.

This is my new home? Sweet!

On the sofa with Hope, who isn't feeling well and isn't so happy about sharing her sofa..

Monica: sofas, I like!
Hope: "We are not pleased"

Her teeth aren't so clean so she gets some of Hope's big dental chew rawhides from the vet..

Dogs always look like they are in nirvana when they chew these things...

Mmmm chew chew chew..

Mmmm chew chew chew chew...

Mmm chew chew chew some more!

The full size German Shepherd choke collar is a tad large for her, new collar today I think.

Anyway Faith is the only one suggested to me that I like so far, not sure it fits though. Hope and Faith isn't bad for a pair of dogs though, and it is easy to call and distinctive sounding to the dog.

Or shortening Monica to Nika... Not wild about that.

Minime is right out... ;)

Nothing I can think of just fits. Help!

3. She is absolutely gorgeous!
You could call her "Blondie" and see if anyone
knows that was the name of Hitler's dog....

My sister-in-law's name is Monique, and everyone
calls her "Monnie", so there's always that.

Sorry about Hope's unrest....we got a puppy
about 8 months ago, in a large part so that
our older dog would have a companion.

The puppy is the bane of Sprocket's existence.
She bothers him CONSTANTLY. I never knew what
the term "dogging someone" meant until we got
Santi.....

P.S.: I think she looks like a "Dora"...
short for "Adorable".

4. ROFL
Blondie after Hitler's dog, that strokes my slightly twisted sense of humor it does.

Yeah Hope has been constipated for days, I even took her to the vet for an Xray yesterday just to make sure nothing is blocking her inside.

She's getting pumpkin since yesterday, vet's orders, and his words.. Keep packing it in one end, it'll come out the other eventually!

Thank god it finally did this morning.

I'm not too creative in coming up with names, they usually revolve around color of the dogs, "boots" had white feet, "Cinder" was jet black... Hope had her name from the shelter, I didn't care for it but she started coming to it so it stuck.

So I'm fishing for lots of suggestions I can pick from.. ;)

We adopted a very pregnant homeless calico kitty when I was a kid (among many other kitties). When she gave birth, we named one of the kittens Schatzi and kept her. I think she lived to be 16.

One thing I remember about our Schatzi was that she would have this certain blasting meow that meant she was up on the patio roof and I was supposed to come outside and toss pieces of dry cat food up to her so she could chase them down and eat them. She had me well trained.

And as it means sister, which is what I've been calling her most, little sister...

Decided to come home early, first work day for Monica at home, and Hope being sick, and I'm going to take them for a walk, Hope seems to be feeling like her self this afternoon, and I think they are going to get a 2-3 mile walk and trip to petsmart for a pair of new collars and some pill pockets (gummy smelly little things to give pills in) for Hope.

Maybe a trip to the dog park if it's not too muddy and some other dogs are there.

I'm going to have to be more careful, I had to clean Hope's ears and put the gummies full of her pills beside me to give as a reward for letting me squirt stuff in her ears, and little sister snuck around behind me and scarfed them up.

I used to try everything to give pills - then I just invested in on of these.

Now I can just grind the pill up and put it in the pill.

Enjoy the walk with the pups. I hope Hope is back at 100% soon.

39. Had a good 2 mile walk, a good trip to petsmart
For matching day glo collars and a couple of hours at the dog park.

Hope is back to her old self now, she has been terribly constipated and hadn't gone for days, it all cut loose today and boy was she a happy girl, played at the park more than she has since I got her I think. She even played fetch the ball twice as much normal.

Monica stuck to me like velcro, she wasn't sure about the neighborhood, the store, the people, the dog park, the other dogs.. Big change from the kennel she's been in for almost a year I'm sure. She snapped at several dogs that know me at the park and came up for a hug.

She did start relaxing and wandering away from me little after half the dogs left though. Good first trip. Had to keep an eagle eye on her, that fear can cause a fight real fast. Most of the dogs are larger than her and they rough house around the park constantly.

She was shy of people too but she started warming up to folks after a bit.

Then home for a few treats and big old meal of canned food, kibble stirred in with a little warm water and a couple of chicken jerkies for dessert.

They are both sacked out big time now.

I'm a tired dad.. ;) Too tired to think about names tonight.
