3. I've seen movies that make Plan 9 look like Citizen Kane.
Try watching "Blood Shack" or "Die You Zombie Bastards" sometime.

Seriously, name a good one. I've sat through shitloads of them and have yet to see a tolerable one, much less a good one. I've definitely never seen a funny one.

7. They would have to be good in the first place to hold up well.
If you take a shit on the floor, no one cares how well it will hold up in a few years. They just want to be rid of it.

9. Maybe I misunderstood your question, then...
...I took your post to mean there are basically very few or no good horror movies. Did you perhaps mean that horror movies which become popular eventually look lame years later or something along those lines?

10. Yeah, that's it.
There have been a lot of horror movies that were hailed as good or scary as hell. When you watch them years later after the hype fades and the techniques get worn, they suck.

15. In that case,
I can't think of a genre that fits your criteria better than horror.

Halloween
The Shining

12. Sci-fi.
To give you an example, Star Trek VI is only 18 years old. The effects were top-notch and presumably very expensive at the time. Try watching it now, and the blood droplets floating in zero gravity look laughably thick, glossy and bad, because computer power has advanced so much that any teenager with an iMac could whip up something better. The plot, with it's ham-handed end of the cold war metaphors on the value of diplomacy, seems terribly dated. The cast is distracting, because the actor playing the president of the Federation is recognizably the dad from That 70's Show and I keep expecting him to call Kirk a dumbass. In a genre with extra structural barriers to the willing suspension of disbelief, time is an enemy of believability.

Older and cheaper movies look even worse, even if the stories hold up well. Even quite recent sci-fi movies tend to look dated within a few years of release, as the technology moves on. The Matrix seemed pretty slick when it came out, but watch it now and the already dated technology seems obvious- the cell phones seem huge and there's this dependence on phone lines and wires that seems strange now that most everything is wireless, and all these supposedly amazing hackers have itty bitty CRTs hooked up to their presumably great equipment.

13. Yes
80's movies - primarily the ones with some damned synthesizer music score.

14. It's weird, because film would seem to be a perfect medium for horror
Part of it is that horror got a trashy reputation pretty early on, so the genre tended to attract commercial hacks and repelled talented directors that were concerned about their reputation.
