By the time the actor sees the video pasted on the Internet or on the rental rack of the local video store, the releases have all been signed and they are powerless to do anything about it.

Yes, I do know a young woman this happened to. She was asked to perform in an adult film, but refused unless her boyfriend could be the male actor (she wasn't camera shy, but had no interest in sleeping with strangers). The video was supposed to have been filmed by a German company, as a scene for a European porn compilation. It turned out that the German company was simply a middle man, who turned around and resold the rights to the video to the highest bidder (which in her case turned out to be a Florida based porn site operator). One of her boyfriends friends apparently recognized him a couple of years later (after the two had broken up), and eventually the information trickled back to her that the video was posted on several different American websites. Legally, there wasn't a thing she could do about it.
