Reality Check: Wendy's Bacon Deluxe
Posted by Robyn Lee, October 31, 2009 at 12:00 PM
Note: In our Reality Check series, we take a look at fast food in the news and show you what it looks like in all its unstylized glory.

This month, Wendy's introduced a new burger, the Bacon Deluxe (with one to three patties), and replaced its previously used bacon with more premium, thick-cut applewood-smoked bacon. Here's what it looks like in real life:

The single Bacon Deluxe ($4.69) comes with a fresh quarter-pound patty, American cheese, four slices of bacon, iceberg lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayonnaise, and ketchup.

I also got the Baconator ($5.99) made of two quarter-pound patties with American cheese, six strips of bacon, mayonnaise, and ketchup—aka, no veggies.

As my first time eating Wendy's burgers (I was a McDonald's kid growing up), I'm willing to say that I liked the burgers more than those from McDonald's and Burger King and the bacon wasn't bad, but it's not something I'd choose to eat again.

2. Methinks you have the grist for a new regular feature on DU
to compete with Sunday's LOLCats and the DUzy Awards.

I, for one, will look forward to future editions of "Amerigo Vespucci's Reality Check"!

5. In all fairness, it's "A Hamburger Today's Reality Check"...
...credit where credit is due, but thanks!

If you go to the link in my original post and scroll down, you will see that they have previously posted "reality checks" for Carl's Jr. and Burger King. The photos are even more dramatic in both...the "real" burgers are beyond pathetic.

4. I have a similar and yet completely different situation:
they all look awful to me, but then I haven't eaten a hamburger in 22 years.

(Hi Tobin...I used to be tofunut!)

But I guess you already knew that. :)

Please forgive my omnivorous ways.

You're a good egg for remembering me, though.

I'm always glad to see you here...sounds like your life has changed a lot, so congratulations for that!

I would never expect it to look like that though because it never has.

9. I used to buy the Wendy's junior bacon cheeseburgers when I worked at the mall
I swear, they used to heap two tablespoons of fucking mayo on that thing....as far as mayo goes, I could take it or leave it but that much? I got sick after eating it and stopped ordering them

I was posting my reply while you were posting yours.

I love Japanese culture too. There's a story that goes with that.

18. Here comes the gaijin version...
...based on my moderate skills in Japanese, it's "I love Japanese culture"

"Nihongo ga dai suki desu = I love Japanese"

"bunka" = "culture, humanities, liberal arts"

Nihon no bunka ga daisuki desuyo!

13. To be fair, the ad burger probably isn't really a burger at all.
It's probably a plastic model or something else inedible.

That being said, nothing would stop me from eating any of them, even the plastic one.

23. Here's a photo of the first burger I cooked on my new gas grill, about a year ago...

2 1-/4 LB. patties, leaf lettuce, red onion, tomato slice, 1000 Island dressing, 2 slices of REAL Tilamook Cheddar Cheese. FRESH sesame seed bun from the Safeway bakery, toasted on the grill.

So you can have one of MINE...PLEASE don't eat the plastic burger.

:toast:

Edited on Sat Oct-31-09 11:44 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
...a month or two ago I posted a thread on the world's largest, most expensive burger...from Japan...had black "squid ink" buns, and it had a photo of the chef turning it on an outdoor grill with a HUGE paddle.

It made the burger you posted look like a "slider."

14. I'd rather have the real one.
It took a few seconds to prepare, rather than an hour or so to prepare like the one in the ad.

Although truth be told, I'd rather have the Big Bacon Classic.

I appreciate improved bacon. But for some reason this new bacon just doesn't work with the rest of the burger. The BBC was a superior sandwich.

Dedee Pfeiffer..."Sheila," the Whammyburger waitress...was PERFECT.
