Is anyone here excited about the movie Avatar?
I don't ever recall a movie with more hype. I am wondering if their really are a lot of excited people or if the excitement is purely manufactured. I have a gut feeling this movie will be lucky to break even, but I am wondering how people feel about this movie.

1. Meh. Maybe I'll rent it.
Course, I never sat through Titanic even at home.

2. I see two possible outcomes.
It either is an enormous blockbuster setting all sorts of records....or.....it totally and unceremoniously bombs, Speed Racer style. For whatever reason, I just don't see any middle ground.

3. Consideirng that the movie will have to earn over a quarter of a billion dollars
just to break even, if you are right the failure could be epic.

4. Cameron managed to do it once...
....at the time, I think Titanic was one of the costliest movies ever made. Thankfully for him, tweenaged girls found Leo DiCaprio dreamy enough to watch the movie multiple times over (despite the poor script) and it came out the highest grossing movie of all time, and likely recieved Best Picture based solely on that fact.

6. I agree the Cameron owes his success with Titanic to the teenage female population
I am wondering who will be the ones that will pump up the sales on this movie with multiple screenings. From the trailers I have to think the movie has a rather narrow appeal. At least with Titanic as the buzz grew about the big box office receipts there were many that wanted to see what the appeal was (I have to think while Titanic was a poor movie, in my opinion, the subject had a broad appeal). I just don't think a story about space smurfs will interest anywhere near the same broad demographics.

19. Narrow appeal?
I'm not sure I agree with that sentiment. My 65 year old father - who is decidedly NOT into sci-fi - wants to see it. Now, granted, I don't see the teenage girl appeal of New Moon being duplicated with Avatar, but it should get action junkies and, of course, all of my fellow geeks. Maybe not WIDE appeal, but I can't see how Iron Man had any wider appeal, and that one did pretty well. (I was going to reference Dark Knight, but I admit there was some morbid curiosity associated with that one for those who would not have seen it otherwise.)

22. If they pull in Iron Man Numbers they wil barely break even
still it is interesting that your 65 YO father is interested. Did he mention what he found appealing about it?

5. Just watched the trailer after seeing your post.
Looks like a mixed bag to me. The scenics look very cool but some of the cg looks generic. Can't tell about the story either. I watched the long trailer. The cartoon beings look a little hokey... like some Disney crept in there.

It will probably have a cult following, perhaps. But I'll wait to hear the reviews before I bother with it. Can't tell if it's like a kid's flick or not.

Edit to add I finally read the whole review and it was an excercise in irony. The critic displays a political agenda while knocking Cameron for his.

9. Cameron's last decent movie was the 1st terminator picture.
Everything after that has been crap. ESPECIALLY Titanic. What a piece of steaming, misbegotten horseshit that was! The only redeeming feature was Kate Winslett naked.

With some exceptions, like The Abyss.

12. I can't even make sense of the 30 second trailer
There's way too much going on special effects-wise for my brain to assimilate. I can't imagine sitting through a feature-length train wreck of overindulged special effects.

32. Than you need to see the 3 minute trailer.
The majority of the movie is CG, but its EXTREMELY realistic. The few reviews I've seen are giving it good scores, yet righty republicans HATE it because they think the story is "lefty garbage".

17. Looks as thought it might be good...
...but then, many or most movies do. A clever premise, but the CGI in the commercials looks a little clumsy, and therefore likely to distract.

Not sure. My wife is interested.

23. It's not my favorite type of movie
But I saw the trailer in IMAX 3-D, and it was very intense. I think the 3-D alone might make it fun to watch.

this definitely strikes me as the sort of movie that one should see in the theater. I probably wouldn't rent it.

Edited on Tue Dec-15-09 07:23 PM by AsahinaKimi
Usually end up being a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.. a good movie takes people by surprise. This will probably go to DVD its first week, then again, maybe it will turn out to be another Star Wars, but I doubt it.

31. Cameron's last became the biggest selling, most awarded, and most critically acclaimed film ever.
Love or hate "Titanic," it was a rare film that excited audiences, critics, and industry professionals in record numbers. That was after creating the Terminator, a legend that has survived a generation and likely will become as strong a staple of American film lore as Frankenstein or Dracula.

So his track record is pretty good.
