5. Gene, Gene was great!
One of my favorite acts was a man who did an imitation of frying bacon. He started out laying flat on the stage, then progressed to sizzling around the edges until he really looked like frying bacon! I tried to find a video of this but no luck. He also did a funny imitation of a water sprinkler too!

Pretty girl walks out on stage, sucking on a popsicle. :wow:

20. Yep.
Story goes that Chuck Barris always threw in a few wildly inappropriate acts so that the network censors would focus on them and not the other, less questionable ones. This act was one that he was SURE would be cut by the censors, but when they didn't get the joke, Barris put it on the air.

And the rest is history.

10. TUC
During the 1992 campaign, I had a dream that George Bush (the elder) revealed that he was the Unknown Comic on "The Gong Show."
It helped him get a bump in my "dream poll." Man, that was a scary dream.

Loved that woman. Was so excited to catch an episode of My Three Sons she did before TGS.

Here she is with Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, and Lionel Hampton.

16. That it was better than American Idol
The "contestants" who got gonged, you could always tell they were hired to be really fucking awful. The real amateurs, they very rarely gonged them. (I assume they had auditions to keep the amateurs who needed gonging off the show in the first place. If William Hung would have tried out for The Gong Show, they wouldn't have put his God-awful audition tape on the air in the first place.)

I checked the Gong Show page on Wikipedia and found out some legitimate performers had appeared on that show--Pee Wee Herman was on it, Andrea McArdle was on it. It also says Tookie Williams was on it; I didn't know he was a performer.

19. I enjoyed Chuck Barris' drug induced confusion
the show was designed to appeal to stoners, which was at least half of the TV audience back then.

Then there was that whole spook thing. You gotta love that.

24. oh god i actually couldn't stand the gong show
Edited on Wed Dec-23-09 08:48 PM by pitohui
i don't like shows based on cruelty, and today's shows based on voting/popularity contests are just as bad

as you might guess, i refused to watch the gong show (i did not know until reading this thread that the people "gonged" were actors who knew they would be "gonged," had i known that, i might have enjoyed it ok)

however i v. much enjoyed his autobiography or spoof autobiography, confessions of a dangerous mind

here the joke is on himself, and it's just a lot more pleasant than humiliating people who just want to be on teevee and make something of themselves

good book, good movie

...from Los Angeles, CA, was on The Gong Show, late 70s.

Scott Thomas Lowe & Atascadero: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L28PryAGXII

The "Peter" in the YouTube posting is the guitar player, on the far left in the video.

Heh.

I think this was posted to YouTube by his brother.
