I used to work with recent Vietnamese refugees. They introduced me to many foods.

I don't think I know how to cook with it, though, it is much better when someone who knows what they are doing puts together a meal.

4. Nuoc mam story from the war era
the U. S. military came up with a high-tech way to track Viet Cong troop movements: a device that could detect the pungent odor of nuoc mam. Since no Vietnamese is ever without nuoc mam, even on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, we figured we had the enemy dead to rights.

Alas, once again, our top brass underestimated the craftiness of the VC. They defeated the scheme by hanging buckets of urine from trees along the route. The sniffing devices were unable to tell the urine from nuoc mam.

Officially, the use of the devices was discontinued because they had "a too-broad spectrum". :P
