Someone please post a clip from Avatar that actually looks real.
So far, all the ones I've seen look like demo clips for high-end video games.

2. fwiw- I saw the digital 3-D in the theater and the little clips
I saw on line beforehand were like comparing a newspaper photo to the real Mona Lisa in comparison.

13. quote for truth
You just can't imagine how it is until you see it. The online and TV ads make it look like utter shit, but the theater experience is totally worth it.

10. I noticed the same thing when television ads first came out.
The CGI looks fake in 2D.

Not so in the theater with the glasses on.

22. How's this?

From the Nav'i perspective.

When this movie comes out on DVD I'm going to have a blast with these sorts of color transformations.

Avatar: The skin tone version.

18. Took my kid to see it in IMAX 3D.
I went in with very low expectations because I have a disdain for movies in general. I was impressed with both the visuals and the story. There is a progressive message in the story and most of the people leaving the theater were misty eyed. The story is anti-corporatist and anti-war. I'm surprised to see it bashed so much here on DU.

23. Who cares if it "looks real"?
Blue kitty-people aren't going to "look real" no matter what the special effects people do. There's nothing wrong with enjoying an escapist sci-fi movie.

25. Well, pseudo-realism is important to some fans of the genre
That is, if the effects don't look adequately real, the illusion of the film can be broken. And before anyone mentions "suspension of disbelief," let's recall that it doesn't mean "pretending that it looks real when in fact it looks like Tony the Tiger."

When a film is being lauded as photo-realistic, and when that film cost a quarter of a billion dollars to make, I don't think it's too much to ask that the Smurfs at least sort of look like they're actually part of the scenery.

Having said that, a number of respondents here have asserted that, when seen in super-duper 3D, the effects are extremely well integrated, and I'm happily willing to accept that.

But that still leaves the issue of a handful of really cartoony looking trailers and previews that Cameron selected to represent his quarter-billion dollar flick.
