LOL, So there's a soccer team called the Pennsylvania STONERS
Edited on Wed Feb-10-10 03:12 PM by charlie and algernon
In my snowed-in boredom, I've been wandering wikipedia and came across this gem:

Pennsylvania Stoners is an American soccer team based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, United States. Founded in 2007, the team plays in National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), a national amateur league at the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid, in the Eastern Keystone Division.

The team plays its home games at the Zephyr Sports Complex on the campus of Whitehall High School in nearby Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, where they have played since 2009. The team's colors are royal blue and white.

The "Stoners" name is derived from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's official nickname, The Keystone State. A previous incarnation of the Stoners was a member of the American Soccer League from 1979-1983.

6. This post reminded me of a wonderful movie - "Breaking Away".
It is about a college town where the rich kids from out of town have a running conflict with the "cutters", or locals. The name comes from "stone cutters" since their parents were the ones who cut the stone for the buildings on campus. I would put this film in the "must see" category.

9. My high school mascot was "the Stoner" -- I swear it's true!
"Stoner" was short for "Sandstoner" -- which is what they used to call the men who mined and cut Sandstone in the area of NY that I grew up in.

We had a lot of fun with that name, believe me!!

14. WHYY (Public TV, Philadelphia) has a sometime critic named Patrick Stoner.
He comes on the air and gives these brief little statements about recently opened movies and does the occasional 30 second interview with a celebrity.
And he has this wonderful vacant expression on his face that never changes. Of course we have a lovely time sniggering at him. Ie., you can't really trust his opinions, he's a Stoner.
(Yes, my family is easily amused.)
