It's About Time: Restored "African Queen" to be released.
There are a few scenes in the film where the green backscreen is maddening. A friend of mine saw this at a screening in NYC last night and said the film looks MUCH better.

The AFI voted Bogart as the 20th Century's greatest male film personality and Hepburn the greatest female personality. It is a CRIME that she did not win the Academy Award for this as I think it's her greatest performance. Vivien Leigh winning for a warmed-over Scarlet O'Hara was a total rip off. Yes, I'm angry about it.

If you haven't seen this film, hang your head in shame. This is one of THE greats. A great film about self-actualization.

A six-year journey filled with challenges nearly as difficult as those faced by Rose and Charlie, the restoration process began at the source: Romulus Films—one of the film’s original production companies—provided access to the original three-strip negative at a London facility where the film was carefully scanned and digitized. The separate elements were then transferred to Los Angeles and painstakingly recombined and inspected frame by frame to ensure that every detail aligned and that any dirt and scratches were removed.

To ensure that the restored picture matched the filmmakers’ original vision, Paramount arranged a screening of an MPAA archive print for the film’s original cinematographer, Academy Award® winner Jack Cardiff*, whose comments were recorded live during the screening. That same archival print was later screened alongside the newly restored version so that the restoration team could ensure that all of Cardiff’s notes had been addressed. The result is a vibrant, warm picture that reverentially recreates the film as it was originally meant to be seen.

8. Also - Lauren "Betty" Bacall said that Bogart and Hepburn were very much alike
in personality. He was more of a trouble-maker, but they were very, very similar in their attitudes toward people and how they worked. She thought of them that way.

For her part, Hepburn said Bogart was one of two men she truly loved.

2. Finally, I'll get to see it to the end.
And in colour.

When it was shown on teevee, I always had to go to bed for school the next day.

The same with The Sand Pebbles. Just saw it recently. Great film. Maybe it's better seeing these as an adult when I can appreciate them more.

7. Two phrases soon to be obsolete! I love it! Yes - I'm also a fan of the Sand Pebbles.
Steve McQueen looks just the way sailors used to look.

C.S. Forester liked the end of the AQ movie better than the one he put in the book. In the book they're each about ten years younger. It works better that they are older, because that makes them more clearly-defined as failures. Think of it as a Royal Navy movie!
