I was offered a Census Job! I am ecstatic!
I got a call this morning offering me a census job. Not an enumerator, but rather an evening 40 hr a week position in payroll that could last til the office closes in September! I have been out of work since October, and I am practically crying tears of Joy! :bounce:

1. Congrats!
I did some work as an enumerator last week, and am hoping for a call back for more work. We'll see.

2. I hope you get it!
From what the enumerator position was described as, it can be a fairly unpleasant position (threats against enumerators by nuts who don't want "gubmint intrusion). May I ask what your experience was like?

4. Oh, it was fine -- just one day of work.
While I live in a very rural area, it's also very blue, so I wasn't worried about scary people. Also, I'm physically imposing and usually walk around with a badass expression on my face; I don't get much trouble :) I was enumerating campgrounds and resorts where people who have no other place to live might be living. In northern Minnesota in March, that would be ZERO. I did get a nice five-mile walk in the woods, however, which I wasn't expecting.

5. Congrats...
Sounds a lot better than going out into neighborhoods and asking heavily armed Tea Party dopes why they refused to fill it out...

Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 04:14 PM by JonLP24
I heard you need a car and I don't have one. If not is there still time to apply?

BTW congrats! :toast:

8. Depends on the region and the particular job, I believe
If you're a field enumerator, you pretty much need a car. Someone who's stationed in an office could probably make do with public transportation.

It's definitely worth applying--I understand that the census office jobs can have a pretty high turnover, so you might have an opportunity!

11. Congrats! I'm training for my Census job right now.
I'll be an enumerator doing group living quarters. There is one overnight when a group of enumerators will be going out to count homeless people.

12. Congratulations! Since it is seasonal, do they automatically hire you back
once they start up again? I was told to ask about employment with them...but don't they give you some kind of test for it? Just curious is all

13. You have to take a test to be on the eligibility list
If you go to census.gov you should be able to find a number to call to go take the test.

17. Sad to say that was 100% serious
The census could have been a cool job, but one of the managers was a flaming bitch and I couldn't deal, so I got something else going on. :D

22. Right on the test
I took an eligibility test in November. The test was not super hard, though a few questions were a tad tricky; I think I missed one out of 27 or 28 questions. It doesn't cost you anything to take the test, except for the time. I don't have before me the number I called to get signed up for the exam. Everyone I have spoken to with the census has been very pleasant.
