I got the best compliment of the day today..

I decided to stop at my fav eatery for breakfast this morning, and eat outside and read the paper...As I was eating, this old woman hobbled over to my table and said "You look absolutely beautiful!" - this left me grinning from ear-to-ear and made my day- and so I said "Why, Thank you!"...As she turned to walk away, she said "I wish I could introduce you to my son, it's just that he's been dead for some time now"...that I didn't know how to respond to ..:yoiks:

1. Wow
What do you say to that?

"I'm sorry." or "Gee, wished I'd met him when he was alive." or "Sit down and tell me how happy we would have been."

2. Aw, that's sweet!
A little different follow-up than expected, maybe, but what a nice thing to hear in the AM. :)

3. beautiful and sad
I've never lost a child before (and goddess help me if I ever do), but it never occurred to me that one of the "what ifs" of this loss would include meeting people you think could have been a potential mate for him or her. Long after her son has passed, she still can't help but think of people who could have made him happy if he were still alive. There's a sad beauty in this.

4. oh my!
How lovely and sad all at the same time.

I hope you see her again and sit with her. I bet she'd love to tell you all about him and that would give her such pleasure.

5. Wow. Another poster said "beautiful and sad" and that's
exactly what it was. I always think things like that happen for a reason.

6. it's hard for me not to imagine it happened for a reason
although i know on a rational level there's nothing spooky about it. i suppose because it's beautiful and unsettling and such an event feels like part of a story, rather than the random occurence it is
