I'm moving to Austin TX in August
I currently live in Denton Tx and recently lost my job and had to move back in with my parents. Its difficult to find a job here right now, especially with my long hair. I had been in a rut for awhile, so when my best friend, who motivates me to be better at everything, asked if I'd move with her to Austin where she will be attending grad school, I knew it would be best for my future, and would get me back into school (hopefully in spring). My only problem is, I really need to have a job waiting for me when I move there. I am a very experienced (and damn good I might add) server/bartender. I get invited by regulars to christmas parties, weddings, bar outings, dinners, etc. I've had old regulars come up to me in stores to see how everything in my life is going. Why? Because I'm fucking great at my job. Yet, it is difficult to get a foot in the door. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows anyone I could send a resume to, it would make my life a lot easier, and I would be eternally grateful.

5. Here is a better link for employment info
http://www.drafthouse.com/main/employment.php

and they are currently hiring! My daughter says it is a great company to work for, and she has been there for 6 years.

7. Resumes are needed in Austin?1
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 09:39 PM by UTUSN
I'm not being mean, O.K., probably am. But a great server will do well anywhere.

Now, Austin has *other* possibilities, like, as the capital of a state, lots of state agencies where they HIRE LIKE CRAZY, and you have State benefits and insurance and all that (until the country starts cutting them all off).

Really, the 3 or 4 pieces of life advice that could save anybody a DECADE are:

1) Cut your hair. Corollary: White-out some tatts.

2) Go somewhere besides Austin.

3) You can be a great server anywhere.

4) TYPING (a.k.a. "keyboarding") will get you a living MORE than almost anything.

9. Ever tried to get a state job here?
It's like trying to win the lottery, especially these days where the state budget is shot and hiring is discouraged. Anyway, in Austin you don't have to cut your hair or white out tattoos, especially for state jobs. They just don't care here.

As for typing, everyone here can type. It's a town full of writers, students, computer programmers, and slackers who hang out on the computer all day long. Nobody will pay you to type here.

A bartender, on the other hand, is in hot demand, and half the success stories in this town come from people who started out serving drinks, sandwhiches, or ice cream. Bar and club owners are highly respected and play a big role in running the city. That whole "Live Music Capital of the World" thing means bartenders are more important than bankers to the city.

10. Ah, so bartending is what this still-hippie pal has missed out on doing for the past
37 years there, scraping along, hitting up pals for "loans," contributing to turning a charming little college town into an urban mess (because, said giddily by masses, "I LOVE (this town)!1," refusing to live elsewhere, and... nm.

11. I got lost somewhere in there...
but it's a great town. :) Yeah, it's changed a few times since the frontier days, and I know some old folk still hate that they paved Congress, but not sure what that has to do with bartending.

8. Try the Austin Chronicle
Edited on Sat Jun-05-10 05:17 AM by jobycom
It's a local paper with an emphasis on the cultural scene (though it does some good reporting on other local stuff, too). The classifieds usually have a lot of club listings. I've known a few bartenders, and it never sounds like they have problems getting jobs, ranging from small music clubs to some of the bigger hotels.

Edit for web site: auschron.com
