1. I have to disagree. I'm a lesbian living in L.A. and I thought it
put lesbians in a negative light. All of the screwing around, the one gal who says she's not playing games but clearly is (dropping off one girlfriend at an airport while picking another one up). Almost all of my friends live "normal" lives but I know that wouldn't make for "good T.V." The so-called writer/producer behind this one and the original L. Word has completely sold out and IMO is damaging the Lesbian community.

6. I would not presume that all L.A. lesbians act as the ones on
the show. Of course the ones the producers picked to feature were picked for entertainment purposes.

Not all of them are screwing around. The one you mentioned is definitely playing games but then you have the couple planning their wedding, the one that is in a relationship with the woman with 3 children, the event coordinator seems to be in a long term relationship too. Rose, the self proclaimed player, is in a committed relationship now... though it does seem she may be one to stray.

7. I haven't seen it,
so I can't comment on whether I like it or not.

I do agree with you Lindsey, that most of these type shows are made to appeal to prurient interests or to people who eagerly look for the "lesbian lifestyle".

In a recent NY Times article they interview the writer/producer (who says she first wanted it set in a women's prison, hmmm).

They reference the gal you talk about, who seems to be cheating all the time, though denying it and the producer also promises that there will be sex later on in the show. So there ya go.

Here's a link to the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/06/arts/television/06real.html?scp=3&sq=the%20real%20L%20word&st=cse

All that being said, I'd probably still watch it if I had a chance. :P

2. Why is it that lesbians so rarely appear in film and television fiction?
I have a hard time thinking of series? plotlines? major characters?

3. I can think of a few.
The Killing of Sister George, Personal Best, Lianna, Desert Hearts, and The Children's Hour come to mind.

4. I loved Desert Hearts...
I had that movie poster on my wall for years back in college days (or was it after college...? yikes!)

5. A lesbian love story plays a huge part of V for Vendetta
I think the heart of the movie is when Evie reads the letter from the lesbian writing about her lover and it is revealed that V is doing his revolution as revenge for the deaths of the two lesbians.
