I know that Robert Klein is supposed to be funny...
but every one of his standup routines that I've seen in the past 30 years has seemed forced and desperate.

1. Sorry, but I have to follow up on that
He may actually be the unfunniest performer I've ever heard.

If I were flying to Australia and could either sit next to Robert Klein or between Carrot Top and Pauly Shore, I'd choose the latter.

Actually, I'd probably throw myself into the turbine, but prior to that...

And that's being kind.

3. I was actually embarrassed for him
If you hear a random septuagenarian stranger on the bus complaining about his bleeding ingrown toenail, I guarantee you that he'll be funnier than Klein.

Klein actually just did a bit on India-based tech support, complete with a "Yes, Sahib" Punjabi accent. And this was a recent performance! Who the fuck writes his material?

:hi:

4. I never thought he was funny
Maybe I just didn't get what he was going for but he always bored me to tears.

Now, if I want to laugh uncontrollably, Billy Connoly is the go to guy for me lately....he kills me!

5. I've only seen one routine by Connoly. Or Connolly. Or whatever.
Edited on Mon Jun-21-10 11:10 PM by Orrex
It was an HBO special featuring him and Whoopi Goldberg (performing consecutively).

He was a riot! I think of his "diced carrots and tomato skins" every time I fall ill...

I haven't liked him in any of his film roles, but his standup was terrific.

8. Why don't you try stand-up sometime
Come back here and tell us how it worked out.

It's easy when you're an armchair critic, posting from the safety of Mommy's computer.

12. See? Now *that's* funny!
It's easy when you're an armchair critic, posting from the safety of Mommy's computer.

It's easy being a stand-up comedian when there's no pressure to be witty, funny, or even nominally amusing.

9. Pshh. Look who's talking.

(Oh come on, it was a joke, and it was just sitting there, waiting for it. I mean, I'd have made the same joke about a poster I thought was funny, too... I mean, not that I don't think you're.... OH LOOK, SQUIRREL!)

10. i never thought he was funny.
I just assumed that his repeated Tonight Show appearances were because he had pictures of Carson and Doc Severinsen doing rails off of Carol Wayne's rack.

11. I recall his act from the 1970's. I didn't think he is very funny either, and when I
saw him recently plugging his new special, he was even worse...
I hope he made enough money from his HBO Special to finally reire gracefully.

14. How in the hell did that guy EVER get work in the industry?
I've never seen him say or do anything remotely funny or entertaining in nearly 40 years.

15. Have you never seen or heard Richard Lewis, then?

His 'routines' are about as funny as acid reflux- and probably cause it.

18. This post is full of much truth.
He's marginally funnier than Klein, but it's nigh imperceptible.

but only as a wince-inducing friend of Larry.

I laughed at his "I can't stop my leg" routine.

he was way ahead of all the other restless leg comics :P

23. Oddly, I complained to my wife about exactly that routine
I recall an HBO special in which he sang his "I Can't Stop My Leg" song for what seemed like 100,000 years, though it probably wasn't longer than seven or eight hours.

Horrible, even then!

But for truly unfunny comedians, you've got to start with Dane Cook.
