55. Radiohead is a one-hit wonder?
I mean, a lot of their songs aren't really accessible for most commercial radio, especially their most experimental stuff in the Kid A/Amnesiac era, but I wouldn't call them a flash in the pan by any stretch.

72. LOL I am a sucker, indeed.
But surely, repeated plays of "Paranoid Android" and "Fake Plastic Trees" on mainstream alt rock stations guarantees that Radiohead would not be pidgeonholed into one-hit-wonder status.

184. Technically, "Creep" is the only Radiohead song to reach the Billboard Top 40
Edited on Sun Jun-27-10 09:40 PM by Hissyspit
which is the traditional definition of one-hit wonder, although these days it does not really apply. "Nude" got a lot of Top 40 airplay a couple of years ago.

"Creep" got to #34.

211. Airplay. Not combined airplay and sales.
I had actually typed that into my post and took it out! But, as I said, as times change and music delivery changes and the way popularity gets ranked, it's almost not equivalent to compare from decade to decade. Still, yeah it kind of seems ridiculous to think of Radiohead as "one-hit wonders." I heard both "High and Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees" on the radio a lot.

18. Also "Last Chance" by Shooting Star (killer song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5BqpvcWuyo

"Stand up on your feet, 'cuz your life is short as hell..."

When the stranger came to town
All the people watched with wonder
In their tattered clothes
Gathered ‘round and raised their eyes up from the dirt

And the stranger said to them
I have been upon the mountain
I have witnessed forces, like cannons
That could ram you to the ground

Stand up on your feet
'Cause your life is short as hell
You could be dead tomorrow
Today may be your

Last chance to believe in yourself
Your last chance to yell
Your last chance to be good to yourself
Your last chance to drink from life's well

In the crowd a voice was heard
Should we get them before they get you
Should we strike the first blow
He said no, no, no, you don't understand

The enemy is in your heart
Self-respect robbed by self-pity
Look across the country
All the people with their dreams dead in their hearts

Stand up your feet
'Cause your life is short as hell
You could be dead tomorrow
Today may be your

Last chance to believe in yourself
Your last chance to yell
Your last chance to be good to yourself
Your last chance to drink from life's well

So drink from the well
Oh yeah

It could be your
Last chance to believe in yourself
Your last chance to yell
Your last chance to be good to yourself
Your last chance to drink from life's well

Drink from the well
Oh yeah
Yeah

Drink from the well

118. Wow, that's a tune I forgot about.
David was a neighbor in the late 1970's, my brother did roadie work for them. I was invited to a party in Downey by David and crew, I go in to the kitchen where there was rumored to be be margarita's and lo and behold, it's half of the Go-Go's doing the mixing.
David is still around, lives in Topanga Canyon, surfs a bit.
Good times.

The Left Banke had a (perhaps bigger) hit with "Walk Away Renee"
Same for Janis Ian with "Society's Child."
The Vogues also had a number of songs on the charts.
Tommy Roe also had a hit with "Sweet Pea"

did Classical Gas, and I agree, it was great. Still have a fond memory of pressing my ear up against the big console stero at Cousin Mike's house in 1968 to hear it for the first time. The next day we went to the Haight to look at the hippies. Ah, good times, good times.

"Signs" - Five Man Electrical Band

"Magnet and Steel" - Walter Egan

"San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" - Scott McKenzie

Those artists may have had other songs, but I don't know that I ever heard any more hits from any of them.

Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 09:32 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
A great song by a band that only put out one album.

There are some other more poppy one-hit wonders that I have soft spots for, mainly because of sentinmental attachment. For example, "Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba reminds me of starting my freshmen year, as does "How Bizarre" by OMC. "Save Tonight" by Eagle Eye Cherry reminds me of when I first started dating my wife. "Steal My Sunshine" by LEN reminds me of summers in my college years. Heck, I even have a soft spot for the "Macarena" which was everywhere in the summer of 1996.

98. I don't see any resemblance at all.
Now on the other hand, there's a song on Billy Idol's first solo album called "Hot In The City" which could be considered a rather blatant "borrowing" from Mr. Gilder.

Billy's lyrics:
Stranger, stranger, stranger, stranger

It's hot here at night, lonely, black and quiet
On a hot summer night
Don't be afraid of the world we made
On a hot summer night

'Cause when a long-legged lovely walks by
Yeah you can see the look in her eye
Then you know that it's

Hot in the city, hot in the city tonight, tonight
Hot in the city, hot in the city tonight, tonight

Stranger, stranger

For all the dreams and schemes,
people are as they seem
On a hot summer night
Don't be no fun, don't forget you're young
On a hot summer night

A sometime someone you're not
Don't wait to see what you got
'Cause you know that you're

We'll walk until my feet drop
I'm a train when I'm hateful
Yeah, lay right down now
And ride until your head breaks
I'm a-walkin' 'til my brain pops
I will move with the beat now
I'm a chain 'round an A-bomb
I'm a ribbon in the heat now
New York!

Nick's lyrics:

Danger in the shape of somethin' wild
Stranger dressed in black, she's a hungry child
No one knows who she is or what her name is
I don't know where she came from or what her game is

(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
(Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty)
(Hot child in the city)

So young to be loose and on her own
Young boys, they all want to take her home
She goes downtown, the boys all stop and stare
When she goes downtown, she walks like she just don't care, care

(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
(Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty)
Yeah
(Hot child in the city)

Come on down to my place, baby
We'll talk about love
Come on down to my place, woman
We'll make love!

Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
She's kinda dangerous
(Hot child in the city)
Young child
(Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty)
Young child, runnin' wild
(Hot child in the city)
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)

65. One Toke Over The Line...1971...
One Toke Over The Line
Brewer & Shipley

One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Awaitin' for the train that goes home, sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Whoooo do you love, I hope it's me
I've bin a changin', as you can plainly see
I felt the joy and I learned about the pain that my momma said
If I should choose to make a part of me, surely strike me dead
Now I'm one toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
I'm waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

I bin away a country mile,
Now I'm returnin' showin' off a smile
I met all the girls and loved myself a few
Ended by surprise like everything else I've been through
It opened up my eyes and now I'm
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
Don't you just know I waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

Don't you just know I waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line

I want to be
One toke over the line sweet Jesus
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Don't you just know I waitin' for the train that goes home sweet Mary
Hopin' that the train is on time
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over the line
Sittin' downtown in a railway station
One toke over line
One toke, one toke over the line

79. I've Never Been To Me...Charlene...
Hey lady, you lady
cursing at your life
you're a discontented mother
and a regimented wife
I `ve no doubt
you dream about the things you never do
but I wish someone had a talk to me like I wanna talk to you

Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
Took the hand of a preacher man
and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces
Because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...

Please lady please lady
don't just walk away
Cause I have this need to tell you
why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me
still living in your eyes
won't you share a part
of a weary heart that has lived a million lives

Oh, I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
when I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo
and showed them what I've got
I've been undressed by kings
and I've seen some things that a woman ain't s'pose to see
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...

Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie
a fantasy we created about people and places
as we like them to be
but you know what truth is?
it's that little baby you're holding
and it's that man you fought with this morning
the same one you are gonna make love to tonight
that's truth that's love

Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
that might have made me complete
but I, I took the sweet life
I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring
the subtle whoring
that costs too much to be free
hey lady I've been to paradise
but I've never been to me...

I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...

They were originally called "Seafood Mama" and had a pretty good regional following in the Pacific Northwest. I believe the record label told them to change the name of the band. Might as well have been "Quarterflashinthepan" as long as their career lasted :evilfrown:

111. Funny thing about that song . . . the album it comes off of is very, VERY good and underrated.
You would think the band that did "Take on Me" would have nothing but fluff and filler for the rest of Hunting High and Low, just like most pop bands of their kind did. But that album has some very well-crafted compositions on it; enough to make you wonder why they were just a "one-and-a-half" hit wonder band.

The title track alone was a near-hit on MTV, as was "The Sun Always Shines on TV". "Train of Thought", "Dream Myself Alive" and "Living A Boy's Adventure Tale" are also very good tunes.

I even like some songs on their U.S.-bombed follow-up Scoundrel Days. a-Ha was one of those bands that found a larger international audience than they did an American one.

145. I was there!!
And yes, the crowd where I was - and we were close enough to see the Capitol - broke into that song several times during the event. It caught on like wildfire and I'm not a huge singing-out-loud type of person, but I sang as loud as anyone that day.

Some of our local volunteers hired buses and did go - they had such a great time.

For me, one of the highlights was when all of y'all broke into the song.

Band members Harry Vanda and George Young produced a lot of albums in their native Australia. Including the first 4 albums by a band featuring George's little brothers, Angus & Malcolm.

103. Waiting For a Star To Fall
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 11:11 PM by blue_roses_lib
~~~~ Boy Meets Girl.
That song never gets old.
hear your name whispered on the wind
It's a sound that makes me cry..
I hear a song blow again and again
Through my mind and I don't know why..
I wish I didn't feel so strong about you
Like happiness and love revolve around you..
Trying to catch your heart
Is like trying to catch a star..
So many people love you baby
That must be what you are..
Waiting for a star to fall
And carry your heart into my arms,
That's where you belong, in my arms baby..
Waiting for a star to fall
And carry your heart into my arms,
That's where you belong, in my arms baby..
I've learn to feel what I cannot see
But with you I lose that vision..
I don't know how to dream your dream
So I'm all caught up in superstition..
I want to reach out and pull you to me
Who says I should let a wild one go free..
Trying to catch your heart
Is like trying to catch a star..
But I can't love you this much baby
And love you from this far..
Waiting for a star to fall
And carry your heart into my arms,
That's where you belong, in my arms baby..
Waiting for a star to fall
And carry your heart into my arms,
That's where you belong, in my arms baby..
Waiting, however long.
I don't like waiting, I'll wait for you..
It's so hard waiting, don't be too long..
Seems like waiting, makes me love you even more
This thread is bringing back memories :thumbsup:
And another... I know this isn't a one hit wonder, but it's the only song of hers I know, so it's a one hit wonder to me:
"Piano in the Dark" Brenda Russell
Piano In The Dark
When I find myself watching the time
I never think about all the funny things you said
I feel like it's dead
Where is it leading me now
I turn around in the still of the room
Knowing this is when I'm gonna make my move
Can't wait any longer
And I'm feeling stronger but oh
Just as I walk through the door
I can feel your emotion
It's pullin' me back
Back to love you
I know I'm caught up in the middle
I cry just a little
When I think of letting go
Oh no, gave up on the riddle
I cry just a little
When he plays piano in the dark
He holds me close like a thief of the heart
He plays a melody
Born to tear me all apart
The silence is broken
And no words are spoken but oh
Just as I walk through the door
I can feel your emotion
It's pullin' me back
Back to love you
I know I'm caught up in the middle
I cry just a little
When I think of letting go
Oh no, gave up on the riddle
I cry just a little
When he plays piano in the dark
129. These sorts of discussions are always hard for me. How to define
"one hit wonder"?
My husband and I get into arguments because he considers Bobby McFerrin as a "one hit wonder" due to "Don't Worry, Be Happy". I argue that just because he only had one "hit song", he doesn't fall into that category because he's had a decades long successful musical career.
I see several artists listed in this thread that I certainly do not categorize as "one hit wonders" because they had successful careers. Maybe they only had one "big" hit, but they were on alternative radio with multiple albums.
Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
Edited on Fri Jun-25-10 04:17 PM by Rob H.
Some car company recently featured a boring, completely characterless cover of it, which kind of annoyed me.
Edited to add: According to good ol' Wikipedia, Schilling has had quite a long career overseas so I guess he's not technically a one-hit wonder everywhere, just here in the USA.
Who moved on from the one-hit Box Tops to the "no hit" Big Star. Which proves what a false measure of success a "hit single" truly is.
Technically, the Grateful Dead were a "one hit wonder", since they only had one single that ever did well on the charts.
Which would be this one, of course --------> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmT6udys8Tc
He had a long career as a singer and TV personality in Japan until his death in 1985 in one of the world's worst plane crashes, a Japan Airlines 747 slamming into a mountain on a domestic flight, due to the tail breaking off. (I know because I spent that summer in Japan and remember when the news of the crash broke.)
There's about 600 more on my ipod from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. I love one-hit wonders!!
229. Switching to Glide . . . That song was played relentlessly on Cleveland radio in 1979-80.
Damn. That and "Funky Poodle" by Wild Horses.
There's this song . . . the lyrics go something like this:
Happy Birthday Kid, Here's a present for you
When you're older, we're through
Now don't take it hard and try not to cry
The truth is I must lie.
It must've been an unsigned band that did this back in 1981; I thought that song was awesome. Either way, I can't find hide nor hair of it on a google search. Don't know the name of the song or the band that did it.
I remember owning the 45 of it. The flip side was the entire "song" in reverse, so that by listening to that, you would be pretty close to going insane anyhow.
