Is it appropriate to yell, "Shut the fuck up!" across the office?
Edited on Sat Mar-27-04 07:46 PM by prolesunited
:nuke: :nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

I am in an open cublicle area trying to concentrate and this idiot has been yammering on for nearly two hours. He's moving from person to person, sharing painstaking details about stories and experiences and he's just so LOUD!

If I chastise him, everyone will hear. I only see him once every month or two and don't know him well enough to speak to him privately.

It seems the minute it stops, a few minutes later, he feels the need to go express himself. And if he's not talking to other people, he's talking just as loudly on the phone.

Well, thanks for listening to my rant. Perhaps if I blow up here, it will prevent an ugly incident in the work place.

Shit! There he goes again! :nuke:

1. Not at all but it would feel so good!
I used to work with someone like this. Shared intimate details of his life with us by discussing them loudly on the phone. (Thank God we got him to stop using speaker phone!) We also got the feeling no one in his life was capable of taking even the smallest step without his coaching them. I'm glad I work in a different part of the building now.

4. No. Don't do it!
Go to the bathroom, go get yourself a soda, or go for a walk. If he's only around once every month or two, it's not worth the fallout. Trust me.

7. Oh, I'm not really going to do it
:P

Jeez, I think this is one of the few times I've even used the word "fuck" about here. I just needed to vent. Thanks for the concern. I'm not nearly that volatile, though. :hi:

8. Dilbert has a few cartoons about this
Dilbert and colleagues send Bob the Dinosaur to give a wedgie to a co-worker who is loudly saying into his speakerphone, "DID I TELL YOU ABOUT MY CYST?"

Alice tells two loud chatters outside her cubicle, "If you don't shut up now I'll pound your head so far into your body you'll have to drop your pants to say hello."

12. You need to take this up with your supervisor
If this does not relieve you of your problem you can go to Personnel (Human Resources) if available. If it happens to be a small company and you know the owner talk to him/her. If this person that is a problem works in a different department you can ask for a meeting with your supervisor and his supervisor, leave the problem person out of the meeting.

Do not create a disturbance yourself. No matter how correct you may be, making his problem yours will only bring grief upon you. Do not gossip among other employees and certainly do not approach this person yourself. Be real cool about this situation.

Please state more if you feel the need to.

21. I had the same problem at one point
I solved it by bringing in a cd player and some of those ear plug listening devices. It was not allowed, and the CEO and some Senior VP's would look at me funny, but never once was I told to not do it. Truth be told, I was the only one doing work in my area and they didn't want to screw it up.

23. In my office, it happens all the time
We are in a cube farm, and somebody is blathering on the phone in her cube about her latest loser boyfriend, way too loud. She is asked a few times nicely to keep it down. She does, but invariably the noise level grows to the point you can't think, because you're wondering how the words "anus" and "peanut butter" got juxtaposed in her conversation. She's on a cell phone, and gives you dirty looks, like you're eavesdropping whenever you poke your head over the cubicle.

Finally, my uber-freeper coworker yells, "SHUT THE FUCK UP, AND GET SOME GODDAMN WORK DONE!"

Happens every week. Don't know why she hasn't been fired. This is the same woman who get to work at 9:30, leaves at 3:30, and takes a 2-hour lunch every day. Yes, she is full-time.

24. My husband, before he retired, had to put up with that day in and
day out. The person was the boss's son and heir to the empire. My husband amused himself by throwing little bon mots at him, which went over his head at the time, but sunk in later. He couldn't say anything about it to my husband the day after without looking really stupid in front of daddy.

To: Loud Mouthed Guy
From: STFU2004@hotmail.com

Hello,
On behalf of everyone in this small office, please lower your voice. While I share your interest in various sports teams, appreciate your reviews of the movie you've recently seen and enjoy your amusing anecdotes about the minutiae of your daily life, I really need to get some work done; and I find it difficult to concentrate when the sound of your voice is filling every single inch of the space we all share. Thanks for your consideration, and best of luck in clearing up that nasty infection you contracted last week - you're right, you should have known she was a slut before you went out with her.
Regards, etc.

27. I don't know if it's appropriate, but it sure as hell should be required!
I often thought that offices would be a lot more interesting if they were more like construction sites. My husband used to be a carpenter before he retired, and he would tell stories about yelling, "Shut the fuck up!" at all sorts of people on the job. They also used to nail-gun each other's shirts to trusses and stuff. God, I wish I could do that in the cube farm.
Carol
PS Of course they also used to fall off the roof a lot. That would probably suck.

30. That reminds me of...
at work we were talking about this guy who got fired a few months ago. Great guy off the job, but a complete slacker at work. So anyway, my one coworker Tre is an awesome woman, and she goes, "well I never forgave him for cursing at me." And I say, "I curse at you all the time." She responds with, "But you do it with love."

it works, I am telling ya: that's what I do. Keep a supply of especially greasy donuts on your desk - when the person is too loud, bean them on the head. They scream, complain to the boss, get all huffy but eventually they GET THE F***ING HINT.
