Identifying "Prime Ribs" - Do you count from the bottom or the top?

And what is wrong with ribs 4 and 6?

1. Let's clarify a point here - "rib" is a type of cut; "prime" is a grade of beef.
So a "prime rib" is not generically a baked standing rib roast. It is a rib roast that is of prime grade.

I don't know if you're pushing that meme or not, but I want other people to read this as they come into the thread in the hopes of ending this bullshit nonsense that any rib roast is a "prime rib".

Most rib roasts that any of us are going to be able to buy in a grocery store are "choice rib", since it's a rare thing for a butcher or store to carry prime beef.

Now, as to your question at hand - what are you talking about? starting counting what? For what reason?

2. It's a joke.
Like prime numbers. 1 is prime, so are 3,5,7,11,13, 17 etc.

3. Oh, I see.
It would be funny to serve prime ribs only by prime numbers of actual ribs, and see if one's dinner guests over the course of the years ever figure out what you're doing.

4. Nice post, Alton Brown.
Did you take that right off of his show? BTW, the way he cooks a "rib roast" is awesome!!

5. No, I took out of my years of experience with food.
I've seen his show about he cooks a roast, and it does look good! I do it a bit differently (with even less fussing than he does), but his would be worth a try some time.

7. I thought it was a rib which is not evenly divisible by another rib

But your answer seems irrational.

6. Prime ribs are overrated. The Ribonacci Sequence is much more aesthetically pleasing...
