I weep for my wife
My wife and I went to the doctor's today to get the pathology results from her ovarian surgery last week. The doctor says they found cancer. The words hit me like a sledgehammer. We looked at each other and the tears came. I haven't been able to stop crying since then. I am so afraid for her and our future. I don't know where to turn.

5. Lots of helpful support groups out there.
Help the both of you deal with the crisis, perhaps. The oncologist could recommend some. Also, remember this: cancer is a disease which is treatable. Sometimes the treatments don't work, but sometimes they do. Do not despair prematurely; your wife would not be the first cancer survivor.

Don't be afraid. Be concerned, and proactively take the disease on. It's not unbeatable. Best of luck; terrible news.

6. we have to see the oncologist next week
On Monday she's having a biopsy on her left breast and will see the plastic surgeon later that week. Her breast removal surgery is sometime within the next month. I know I shouldn't give in to despair but I guess it got to be too much. I will ask the oncologist for a referral to a support group.

7. And we weep with you.
I am so very sorry that you received bad news. And I have nothing, really, to offer you except to say that I wish this had not happened to your wife.

I know that you are afraid. Who wouldn't be? I hope that you will somehow be able to make use of the fear as an activator. Learn as much as you can about the disease and all of the treatment options. Don't be afraid to ask questions, ask the same questions again and again until you understand, and seek out more than one opinion. Some doctors are terrific, compassionate individuals, but some tend to try to intimidate their patients into simply accepting their advice without question. Your post doesn't indicate your opinion of the doctor.

You will need to be strong to be an advocate for your wife's care. Again - I am very sorry.

9. Well that stinks.
Ovarian cancer is the truly scary, serious stuff, but your wife has a better shot at survival than any other time in history. I do not know where you live, but if you have a chance to get her to a large teaching hospital for furtehr evaluation and her treatment, I would certainly do so. If you are anywhere near the SF Bay Area I have a Dr. who specialzes in the toughest ovarian cancer cases.

Educate yourselves on the disease even though it is scary to do so. Get as much supportive care (emotional, nutritional) as you can for you both, and prepare youself for a rollercoaster.

Doctors know where to go from here and ask for emotion guidance, also.

17. God I'm so sorry
You're in shock right now and your brain must be spinning out of control with every terrible possible outcome you've ever heard of with regard to cancer. I agree with those who point out the highly advanced treatments available, which, while not a guarantee, will give your wife a much better shot at recovery than patients of years past.

I learned a lot about cancer last year when my Mom went through it. For instance, many cancers (even ovarian) can be "indolent", meaning they move so slowly as to be little threat to the patient. Maybe this will be the case for your wife. Unfortunately my Mom's disease was high grade and aggressive, but I vowed to always remember that just hearing the word "cancer" doesn't mean a death sentence. Far from it!

Please try to resist the feelings of doom. I know it's very hard. You're doing the right thing by talking to people and reaching out. This period of shock, right now, is particularly hard, but it won't stay this unbearably awful. It will get easier once your wife begins treatment and you can see action being taken. That's how it was for me.

All my most healing thoughts to your wife, and I'll be watching for updates (good ones I hope!)

27. no idea on what stage the cancer is in
The doctor did say that the cancer was in one ovary and part of a tube. The other ovary was clear. Also the "wash" was tested and it came back clear as well. Some of the shock has worn off and I'm trying to put myself in a hopeful frame of mind. I appreciate all the good thoughts that my wife and I have received from my DU friends. I know that she will have chemo therapy at some point but I'm not sure for how long.

71. I know it's scary right now, but I'm into my 11th year cancer free.
My niece is also an 18 yr. survivor, she was only 19 y.o. at the time, and she's never been healthier. Keep positive thoughts (as much as you can), and know that you have friends here who care, who can be that support system you'll need through this process. :grouphug:

72. Ah, so very sorry to hear this
and totally understand your feelings, and those of your wife as well. My MIL went through this last year. You have a tough row to hoe coming up. My very best wishes and prayers for you and your wife, indeed your whole family. The vibes from those here will help immeasurably, as will the strength between you and she and the bonds in your family and friends.

Take care, and please let us know how it goes. Many hugs. :grouphug:

87. Oh no.
I am sending you and your wife the best prayers I know how.

In the meantime, I second what others have said. American Cancer Society, good info. There are good support groups out there. Work with your doctors and wish them the best. Talk with others who have been there. And most importantly, DO NOT withdraw from her emotionally in any way. She will need you now more than ever, and you need to take on your feelings full-force so you can be there for her.

98. thank you all for the kind words and healing thoughts
It made me cry to see all of you offering encouragement and words of comfort. Right now she's trying to figure out a way to tell her family. She has a sister that's somewhat fragile and she would fall apart at hearing the news. I know that with you folks and the people at the hospital we'll get through this in good shape. This is my wife and I last Easter.
