I'd never realized, until tonight, how nice ceiling fans can be...
I'm staying with my daughter for a couple of days and it's HOT up here in the high desert...

The A/C runs on and off all day, but at night, we turn it off, open the windows and allow the now-cool air in...

And turn on the ceiling fans.

Wow.

I had not realized just how efficient these are...

I'm sure the rest of you already knew, lol!

I am really comfortable!

:P

1. My dear CaliforniaPeggy!!!
.
I have only been impressed by ceiling fans under certain
conditions (it has to be fairly CHILLY already).
.
Every single one I enjoyed had the functionality of a
wind tunnel fan.
.
When I was sitting under them, I almost needed some sort
of trapeze-like apparatus to HAUL myself up outta my chair.
.
.
My best friend (my OTHER best friend, Kali) has been in a
wheelchair for 40-50 years now. He took me on a tour of his
house and I saw the coolest lift-assist trapeze bars and
swings and ropes n' stuff over his king-sized waterbed.
.
.
When I commented that it was the most amazing handicap
apparatus I had ever seen, he looked at the bed and said,
without cracking a smile, "WHAT handicap apparatus?"
.
.
I'm pretty sure he was being serious.
.
.
.
Gives you a little insight as to why I consider him to be
one of my best friends, eh?
.
.

2. My dear MiddleFingerMom!
The fan I'm currently sitting under is twirling in a nicely cooled room...the window is open and the lovely cool desert air is entering!

NO wind tunnel going on here...

Your wheelchair-bound friend sounds like a very cool guy indeed!

Since you're cool yourself, I'd say it's no coincidence that you two are best of friends...

9. In the Texas heat, ceiling fans are a godsend!
My master bedroom has really high ceilings, and the a/c outlets are near the top of the room. Even though the cool air falls naturally, the fan balances the temperature throughout the room. When the outside temps are bearable, it's great to open the windows and reverse the fan. It draws the outside air in perfectly.

10. Wouldn't be without ours.
We have them in each bedroom and a couple in our main living area.

They can help with the AC/heating as well. We're in an old farm house so they help distribute the window AC as well as the radiator heat. LOL, as long as I remember the climb up and flip the little reverse blade switch.

i can't open the windows, though....

it's still too hot/humid and I wouldn't be able to breath by the time the morning came if I did that.

however, i can push the temp up, and crank up the ceiling fan for whatever room Im in.

18. Yup. I went up to the cottage last week. It was stinky hot inside but as it was evening
it was cool outside with a nice breeze. Well I opened all the windows and turn on the ceiling fan in in no time the inside was a cool and refreshing as the woods outside. I had a beautiful sleep right underneath the ceiling fan on the livingroom couch.

22. agree ;)
hey, that is true! Ceiling fan could give the natural wind chill effect on summer. Really great! And also, if I may add,it can actually reduce SID (Sudden Infant Death), by creating proper room ventilation. So it is really advisable to have fan specially those with kids- http://sararte.com/ceiling-fans--/

At night the AC is set at 84, ceiling fan over my bed, cover with a sheet and I'm comfortable. By the way, I live in Az. At one time in my life I worried that the fan would fall from the ceiling over me but not anymore.

27. Yes, ceiling fans are wonderful
When I lived in Southeast Asia, there was one in almost every room of the house. Because it was so hot there, without airconditioning in every room, it was a necessity

I miss them because there are some times when it is not hot enough to want the air-conditioning but it is not cool enough not to have some sort of cooling mechanism. That's when the fans would come in handy

29. I love fans, period.
They don't have to be ceiling fans.
I grew up with window fans in my bedroom window. They stirred the air and made a lovely hum. I remember thinking, as a little kid, that I loved that hum because it sounded like outboard motor boats on a Minnesota Lake, which I had some familiarity with because I was born in North Dakota and when I was very little we went to said Minnesota lakes for fishing vacations. . I've learned more recently that that lovely hum is "White Noise" which has a natural calming, go-to-sleepybye effect. I prefer to think of it as motor boats on a lake. "White Noise" sounds far too bland.

31. They can be a pain-in the-tuckus if you're an indifferent housekeeper--
I know I hate cleaning the ceiling fan in my kitchen--attack of the aerial dustbunnies!

(No, not quite that bad but....:eyes:)

But the fan over the rangehood doesn't always take care of all the smoke from an olive-oil based stir fry, so, I'll confess, even if it isn't always cute, I love its utility. Also, since my kitchen is where we spend a lot of our time, and it's in the middle of the house where there is no window (row home) it's a good stuffiness-banisher even on days that aren't in the 90's, which has been like every day in July, anymore, which is killing me....

But I digress. I wouldn't trade my ceiling fan for track-lighting, anyway.

Brings the cool night air in and chills the room down. I swear by them since the week when I lived in Houston and the a/c went out in the middle of a heat wave. And HGTV doesn't have to have a panic attack, as if anyone cares.

We used to live in the high desert too, and believe me, we were the first people on our block with central A/C!

We loved it during the day! At night, we would turn it off and turn on a giant window fan that was hooked to the thermostat...

It pulled the hot air out of the house and would replace it with the chilly night air...Heaven!

I had a great time, but busy...And I'm home now. She needed another adult for a couple of days... I was really glad to be there for her and the kids.
