Mwuhahahaha! I just plugged in my new 1.5 terabyte harddrive
Sweet!

Finally, a drive big enough to hold all my music.

And quite amazing to think that the margin of error between actual bytes and byte-designation at 1.5TB is bigger than the harddrives that were available ten years ago.

Which is to say, 1.5TB should be 1.500 billion bytes using the strict definition of Tera, but since in computer terms Tera means 2^40 bytes, it's 1.649 billion bytes.

So the margin of error is 149 billion bytes. I bought my first 100GB hard-drive in 1999 or 2000, soon after they came out. I think it was $250 or $300. My 1.5TB USB external was $93. 15 times the storage for a third of the price.

That then-humongous drive is now smaller than the numerical error of our memory storage designation for harddrives.

Cool.

1. I have a 1 TB and I always thought actual HD's are a bit less, not more than the rated size.

2. Yeah, I will - I have another drive that will serve as backup for a while.
But only until I get the rest of my CD collection ripped.

Good price on Amazon for this one. The 1TB was like $75 and the 2TB was $140.

At $93 for 1.5TB, this was the cheapest by far per TB of any drive. And it's a Western Digital, so it's gonna last.

7. Mine are WD. One is 2 yrs. Another is 3. Though I have not had a problem with them
I hear they often crap out, especially if tipped over.

3. Im holding out for a
100 TB drive. That way my drive can always be like 1% used. Unless I get whatever is the newest version of windows when they come out, in which case it will be like 93% used. Oh well.

6. No, I still need another 30G for the World Domination Laser control system.
At least, that's the what guy at the store said, but I think he was just trying to rip me off by buying a bigger flashdrive.

But it was frakking $30!!

I'm not gonna spend that much money just to hold the control system for the World Domination Laser.

That's half a good bottle of scotch!
