Kali accused me of having a man-crush on Greg Brown...
Edited on Mon Sep-06-10 11:50 AM by MiddleFingerMom
(on edit) can someone let me know if the link to the song WORKED?!? Thanks.)
.
.
.
...well, maybe I do.
.
.
.
I know there's been lots of times when I wished I could BE Greg Brown.
.
.
.
A singer and storyteller par excellence.
.
.
.
My co-best-friend Mike and I went to see him here in Tucson in some little theater
downtown (I don't remember which) and we got there last-minute (as always) and,
Mike being in his everpresent wheelchair, they shunted us off to the far remote
"handicapped seating" area.
.
.
.
Which, as it turned out, in this theater just happened to be front... row... center.
.
.
.
Mike looked at me and said, "YAY, DISABILITIES!!!!"
.
.
.
I hope this link works. If so, click on the "Canned Goods" track -- I've been
looking for an example of THIS version for a long time (there are two live
versions on YouTube that don't have this amazing story in them -- besides
being of relatively poor quality).
.
.
.
This guy has obviously never lost the sense of wonder of "kids".
.
.
.
"Free. We were FREE."
.
.
.
"Nobody's ever got bosom'd to death, I know THAT much."
.
.
.
:rofl"
.
.
.
Click on Track #7 "Canned Goods" and stay with it. I PROMISE you'll be very, very glad you did.

1. if that is the one I am thinking of I love it too
how are you doing this morning?

I was a total bum and slept in. Was out in the grass too much yesterday and got exhausted from sneezing at least a brazillian times. I know that sounds wimpy but just THINK how much of your body gets jolted in a sneeze - now imagine doing it continuously for HOURS! (sneezes are nose orgasms, by the way, just less fun)

2. I'm doing fine and it IS the one you're thinking of...
.
.
.
...about Grandma and the farm and the canned goods and the monumentally-bosomed
aunts and the wild-and-free boys being seduced back into civilization by the
cloud of aroma from Grandma's fried chicken ("ya didn't have to come in 'til
DARK, that was the deal. It wasn't DARK. It was ADULT-dark.").
.
.
I'm starting my new schedule. I think part of the reason why I got so sick is
that I was pushing myself too hard -- dead of summer and, with all the road
construction going on, the bus stops are pushed WAY out from normal so I had to
hump long distances quickly in the heat -- by the time I got to work, I felt like
I had already put in a full day.
.
.
So now, down to 31 hours -- still keep my fulltime status and health insurance,
but I get an extra day to recover and recharge.
.
.
Gotta trim the already-bony budget even more, but it was obviously necessary.
.
.
Besides... time off is GOOD time.
.
.
.

4. That you even know who Greg Brown _IS_ is a high recommendation.
My favorite Greg Brown song is "Canned Goods." It's my childhood, in a few verses. :)

Sissy. (And "Sissy" or "Sis" are _huge_ terms of endearment where I come from, as I'm sure you know.)

:loveya: madly, sweets! :*

7. I definitely take that
as an honor to be cherished, darlin'. Definitely. :*

My fave radio station plays that version and I made sure to ask which album it was on when I heard it. I really need to buy it. It's also a great song to play when a DJ needs time to attend to personal matters. LOL

8. My friend Mike that I mentioned above...
.
.
.
...got me my start in radio. I was doing volunteer clerical work at our local
community radio station, never IMAGINING anything about being onair when he
suggested that I submit a program idea (he was the Program Director at the time).
.
.
.
I asked him about a comedy/novelty show a la Dr. Demento. He told me the last
two attempts had gone down in flames, quickly devolving into Three Stooges
routines and fart jokes.
.
.
.
I submitted a proposal for one... and the cover sheet, in HUGE bright red letters
had the show's suggested name, "MiddleFingerMom's Fart/Poop/Booger/Burp Hour".
.
.
.
My friend knew I was being facetious, but one of the humorless admin staff walked
by and saw it and said, "You're NEVER going to have a show."
.
.
.
I started the following week.
.
.
.
Anyways, Mike did the drivetime slot from 4-6. I would listen to him at work. He put on
a band-submitted L-O-N-G song submitted by an obscure band (without PREVIEWING it)
and went out to the front porch to have a cigarette (I deduced this correctly at the time
from what happened).
.
.
.
The last few MINUTES of the song were the singer plainly and clearly singing "Roll-a-boogie,
motherfucker" over and over and over and over and over again.
.
.
.
When Mike finally HEARD it, he wheeled himself in as quickly as possible, but the damage
had been done.
.
.
.
My co-workers wanted to know why I was literally laughing so hard that I was CRYING!!!!
.
.
.
I STILL tease him about it to this day.
.
.
.
Roll-a-boogie, motherfucker!!!!
.

10. I'm sure those kinds of mistakes
have happened many, many times in the past. Nowadays, it costs you some serious money when that happens. How did we go so backwards?

13. It happened under the Republican watch, following...
.
.
.
the TRULY absurdly overblown "Janet Jackson incident" -- when Colin Powell's
brother Michael was head of the FCC and it had a very repressive RW majority.
.
.
.
.
.
We used to do live phoned-in spontaneous requests (we had TENS of thousands of CD's
physically present on the shelves, so if you wanted it and it wasn't Top 40 popcrap,
we PROBABLY had it).
.
BTW we were largely older hippie types, though we were ALWAYS trying to get young
blood in for a longterm generational strategy for the station. Once, we had set up
a grade-school visiting day, and one of the kids asked the guy who had an afternoon
folk music show if we had any Korn.
.
"I don't know," was the answer, "but I think the C's are in the studio itself."
.

.
There was one asshole who called on a regular basis, especially the more-recently
onair folks who weren't as knowledgable (and hip to this guy's crap) who would request
John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" (Labor Day driving him into a frenzy) KNOWING that
the word "fuck" would come out over the air.
.
Seasoned radio people would simply push the dead-air button when it came around (we
worked without a safety net -- no 7-second delay for us), but others would forget or
not know and, even BEFORE the FCC feeding frenzy... our license was in potential peril.
.
.
COOL song, though.
.
.
As soon as you're born they make you feel small,
By giving you no time instead of it all,
'Til the pain is so big you feel nothing at all,
A working class hero is something to be,
A working class hero is something to be.
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school,
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool,
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules,

.
.
.

12. I am very very glad that I did, indeed!!
Nice song, and even nicer story. What's interesting, I have family in Southern Iowa, family farm is there, so this really hit home, it's like he was describing summers I know. Very cool. I enjoyed the link the other day, and this was great, thanks!
