Favorite drum solos?
In honor of my Rush concert tonight, in which I can't WAIT to see Neil Peart do YYZ, I thought I would ask you guys what your favorite drum solo performance is.
I find it hard to believe that anything is better than this though:

Followed (MAYBE led) closely by this piece -- 20 years old when he

2. Oh, That's An Easy One.

Joe Morello's extended break in the Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Take Five." Circa 1959---and it sounds better today than ever......

28. What Puts Morello's Work Over The Top For Me Is That.....
.....contrary to 98% of drummers' riffs, there's not anything in the way of personal showiness, no snotty ego trip. Just extraordinary technical ability, completely in the service of propelling the music forward. In 5/4 time, yet.

You have good taste in percussionists......

3. Abbey Road, B side, the only solo Ringo took in the Beatles.
otherwise most solos are pretty dull and self indulgent. As a guitarist I feel that most guitar solos are even more self indulgent and dull than drum solos.

12. My first choice, and that solo spawned the one by Bun E Carlos...
...in the middle of "Clock Strikes Ten," on Cheap Trick's "Budokan" album (I've read interviews where he's stated this).

"Ain't That A Shame / Clock Strikes Ten" @ Budokan ("Clock Strikes Ten" begins at the five minute mark, drum solo is @ 7:15):

Notice how he changes pitch by moving his left hand around inside the drum.

For entertainment, I could watch any of the solos Tommy Lee did in that spinning metal cage back in the day for Motley Crue.

22. Blast! -- Battery Battle
It may not be what most people think of in terms of drum solos, but any drummer will love this. If you don't know what Blast! is, it's basically a Broadway version of Drum Corps International.

It has several general sections... If you're not a big DCI fan, go straight to 3:33 and start from there

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx-be2_c_7Q&feature=related

0:00 Snare Solo
2:00 Harnassed Snare Solo
3:33 8-Snare Line, Glow in the Dark
4:18 8-Snare Line, w/ toms and cymbal rack
4:44 Blind-folded!
5:44 Snare Duel
6:40 Full Battery (snares, basses, quints) plus pit
7:27 Quint Solo
8:16 Full Battery, plus field drum and cymbals, and various toys

Also, not a drum solo, but I love this piece of theirs (which is from the whole band, rather than just the battery). I mean, c'mon, trombonist on a unicycle :)

26. This is really a laugh for me - I listen to everyone's favorite and I love them all...
I love a really good drummer, and thankfully we have been blessed with aome great ones over the last 50 years or so...I can't really think of an overall favorite, but one of my top favorites is the late Tony Thompson, who played with Power Station/Robert Palmer an dmany others includnig Chic.
He was a performing drummer since age 11, and had a very powerful unique stye as found inPower Station's "Some Like It Hot"....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq6hY0Y3KGk

My understanding is that in 2003 Tony felt like he had the flu, and was diagnosed with renal cancer and died within a month. Singer Robert Palmer had died of a heart attack just a short time before.

29. Mark- my very first concert was seeing Power Station!
I was too young to really appreciate a good drummer (I was more intrested in the ex-Duran Duran members) but I had the good fortune to see him...:)

Jo Jones invented modern drumming.

I like drummers who can keep time on a ride. I get tired of being hit over the head with the beat. The word "drums" is NOT latin for "hit hard, play LOUD".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDtlktFiTjM&feature=related

In this video Krupa almost fesses up to where he and Buddy learned their stuff.
