I got a surprise at the barber shop today
I keep my hair very short. It's much easier to take care of out on the road and it feels good, too, especially when it's hot. I usually let it grow until it starts to lay down and then get it buzzed back down to where it's just long enough that you don't see my scalp through it.

I've been at home and was in need of a hair cut so I went to the barber shop and told the barber, "Number three on the clipper and mow it down."

As he was working, a lock of hair fell down on the gown in front of me. It looked to be somewhat gray. I told the barber that it appeared that I was going gray. He confirmed it saying that I was about a third gray. That surprised the hell out of me. I hadn't noticed it before then. I don't know if I was in denial about it to the point that I didn't see it or if I just needed some glasses or what. I think what may have happened is that it had just turned gray recently and quickly, and was more noticeable because I get my hair cut so often.

I'll be 38 next month and as a man I've always looked young for my age. Most people guess that I'm about 10 years younger than I am. This gray hair is going to look rather strange with my baby face. The barber told me that I might be totally gray by the time I'm 40. Then he made me feel really old and clipped my eyebrows. :D

A weird feeling came over me. I don't know exactly what it was, but I still feel that way. I'm not depressed about it. I'm actually strangely happy and mellow. Given my history of hard times, I guess I'm lucky to be getting old enough to have gray hair. There was a time in my life when I didn't think I was going to make it this far.

I am not going to dye my hair.

I figure if I missed anything the $1,000,000,000 will take care of it.

Thank you so very much!

6. Yeah, someone keeps throwing gray hair on the gown when I get a haircut
For this year's driver's license renewal, I traded 45 pounds off my weight (yay) for a more realistic assessment of my hair color (gray). Trade-offs.

9. I wish I had some hair to turn gray.
I'm 28, and I have a bald spot on the back of my head already. It's not big, but it's noticeable. I nearly cried when the barber showed me the back of my head last week with a little mirror. I'm going in this weekend to get the rest of my hair buzzed off so it's not so noticeable.

than to hold on to the few whisps you have left. Nothing more ridiculous looking than a guy that is bald on top and growing a tiny pony tail to compensate. As a woman, I would much rather have a bald headed man!

14. If stress and intense emotions cause gray hair, then I guess that may be it
I guess it's just genetics. My mom, her mother, and my aunt on that side of the family all went completely gray at a young age. Younger than me, in fact. So did my grandpa on my dad's side, although my dad is 20 years older than me and probably has about the same amount of gray as me. One of my sisters, who is 2 years younger than me has been going gray for a while and it's become very noticeable.

she was ~21. She dyed it for about 25 years, and is only now letting it go gray. She's only 55, so she was less than happy about being gray any earlier than that.

25. When I was 15, my 15-year-old girlfriend has black hair down to her waist...
.
.
.
...and a natural inch-wide white streak that started perfectly
where she parted her hair in the middle (I first wrote "at her
part in the middle"... but that doesn't sound RIGHT, does it?)
.
Hot. HOT. HOT!!!
.
She absolutely hated it because it reminded her that her mom
had gone completely gray by the time she was 21 (Moms wasn't
bad, either).
.
.
.
I got a very few gray hairs starting at 21 -- but didn't advance
until around 40. Through my 40's, I went through "greying" to
"salt-and-pepper" to "not enough pepper to make a mouse sneeze".
.
.
.
I really kinda liked it, although people went from guessing 5 years
younger than I was to 5-10 years older. It also went through what I
considered a really nasty "yellow" stage -- mellowing out much more
so now to a gray, even some white.
.
.
.
What kinda bothered me is when my chest hair went gray. I didn't
realize that the graying moves south as you age.
.
.
.
Though I can't WAIT for my pubic hair to turn gray!!!
.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
My penis is going to look SO distinguished.

.

.

.
.
Used that line shortly after I joined DU and it earned me
my first scheduled ass-kicking from Skittles as it made
her wonder why someone named "Mom" was talking about
having chest hair.

And, like you, I ain't never dying it.

55. What's funny is that as a young woman I always wanted
To be the old lady with long gray hair. Now it looks as though that will never be. Not only am I not graying, my hair is getting shorter - I think it has something to do with the meds I'm on or some other health thing. It used to be almost waist length, now it only goes to my shoulder blades. It did get a little longer for a while, but has lost length again - that is why I think it is the meds since I was on them for a while, then off, then back on.

I'm like you - no makeup or jewelry.

for several years now. At 63 it's probably 1/2 to 2/3 gray, but it doesn't really show much since I'm a natural blonde. I have never colored my hair and don't intend to start now. It would take more time and effort than I'm willing to spend.

64. Well, I don't actually COLOR my hair
I use cassia and a little henna, mostly for conditioning, really. They are absolutely wonderful conditioners, and all-natural if you get body-art quality products. I wouldn't dye my hair either, it's death to the hair, and my hair is almost waist-length, and at my age, I want to preserve it. But I like the effects of the herbs on my hair, and if it enhances the color? - eh, it's all good. :)
