21. 2 blocks north of the blast furnace mentioned in S-1 L-3 --->
Autumn Begins in Martins Ferry, Ohio
. . . . . . . . by James Wright . . . . . . . .

In the Shreve High football stadium,
I think of Polacks nursing long beers in Tiltonsville,
And gray faces of Negroes in the blast furnace at Benwood,
And the ruptured night watchman of Wheeling Steel,
Dreaming of heroes.

All the proud fathers are ashamed to go home,
Their women cluck like starved pullets,
Dying for love.

Therefore,
Their sons grow suicidally beautiful
At the beginning of October,
And gallop terribly against each other’s bodies.

28. I was born and raised down in Alabama
On a farm way back up in the woods
I was so ragged that folks used to call me Patches
Papa used to tease me about it
'Cause deep down inside he was hurt
'Cause he'd done all he could

My papa was a great old man
I can see him with a shovel in his hands, see
Education he never had
He did wonders when the times got bad
The little money from the crops he raised
Barely paid the bills we made

For, life had kick him down to the ground
When he tried to get up
Life would kick him back down
One day Papa called me to his dyin' bed
Put his hands on my shoulders
And in his tears he said

He said, Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it's all left up to you

Two days later Papa passed away, and
I became a man that day
So I told Mama I was gonna quit school, but
She said that was Daddy's strictest rule

So ev'ry mornin' 'fore I went to school
I fed the chickens and I chopped wood too
Sometimes I felt that I couldn't go on
I wanted to leave, just run away from home
But I would remember what my daddy said
With tears in his eyes on his dyin' bed

He said, Patches
I'm dependin' on you, son
I tried to do my best
It's up to you to do the rest

Then one day a strong rain came
And washed all the crops away
And at the age of 13 I thought
I was carryin' the weight of the
Whole world on my shoulders
And you know, Mama knew
What I was goin' through, 'cause

Ev'ry day I had to work the fields
'Cause that's the only way we got our meals
You see, I was the oldest of the family
And ev'rybody else depended on me
Ev'ry night I heard my Mama pray
Lord, give him the strength to face another day

So years have passed and all the kids are grown
The angels took Mama to a brand new home
Lord knows, people, I shedded tears
But my daddy's voice kept me through the years

Sing
Patches, I'm dependin' on you, son
To pull the family through
My son, it's all left up to you

Oh, I can still hear Papa's voice sayin'
Patches, I'm dependin' on you, son
I've tried to do my best
It's up to you to do the rest

I can still hear Papa, what he said
Patches...

I remember doing a 5th grade report on "a different state" so I chose Maryland, figuring I could pick my Dad's brain. Guess what the only two things we could come up with were???

Yup. Johns Hopkins and Poe!!

Soooo glad my mom dragged us back to the Left Coast. Especially right now, seeing as Santa Cruz was 72 degrees today.

105. That's a cool place to be from
Everytime I hear something about Coffeyville, I hear Joe Strummer in my head singing "Daddy was a bankrobber, but he never hurt nobody...."

Actually I was only there for my first year of life. My mother's parents lived there. It's an eensy cotton mill town.

Not sure if anyone here lived there when the community started? It was magical! My first school was Terraset, which was solar powered. The school was mostly underground, which was huge for the community in terms of progressive thought.

We had biking/jogging paths that could easily take you anywhere. Extremely friendly atmosphere, hardly any crime. Reminds me of the Tolkien books when he described The Shire.

So clean, so pure, so innocent!

Raised in Queens, NYC. I left (or better yet, was run out of New York by "reverse" racists--yes, I'm white) when I was 20 and never came back except to visit. Priced out.

115. Malpractice capital of the United States.
Pasadena, Texas. Where they drop you on your head at no extra charge.

My aunt was supervising my delivery. She was smarter than the doctor. She had a Master's in Nursing from Yale. Only Ivy League graduate in our family.
She said that the doc decided to drag me out with forceps before mom was fully dilated. That doesn't surprise me.

That said, at least Momma was a live bearer instead of an egg-layer. :D

I shudder to think what would have happened back then if Mom had needed a C-section. Sounds like it was already a disaster in the making.
