Is Fincher's THE SOCIAL NETWORK worthy of a Best Picture nomination? I am just an observer interested in asking. I am more interested in what you have to say about Fincher's film.

What say you?

1. "Social Network" was a good movie with some great actors and interesting message
It was definately NOT a pro-facebook/Zukenberg movie. But was it the best movie of the year? No, I still think "Inception" is getting royally screwed including director Christopher Nolan (who was passed over for best Oscar). I know I sound like a broken record, but I just felt that "Inception" was an original idea not based on someone's biography or a comic book or a previously released TV Show/movie. It was truly original thru and thru; viewers left the movie and they talked about it especially it's strange ending.

Nolan needs to stop releasing these movies during the summer time and save it for November so he can win himself an Oscar. Summer movies tend to be thought of as 'blockbuster' and not 'award-winners'.

BTW Fincher is a very talented person and probably what is making him do well is he took material that was basically people writing computer programs and going over legal briefs and somehow made it interesting without being campy.

2. Aaron Sorkin wrote it, didn't he? Says it all, for me.

3. It was a good, solid, fun, nuanced picture
If Trite twaddle like "Black Swan" can be held up as significant, then anything's deserving of a shot.

Kubrick? No, but he's made some mighty fine and honorable fare, and he's really got something. I will continue to look forward to his pictures...

4. I think it definitely merits a nomination
They nominate ten films now, so nominations aren't quite what they were a few years ago.

David Fincher is a very good director. I didn't care for Benjamin Button and never got around to seeing Alien 3, but otherwise I've liked all his films (to varying degrees, of course, but nothing bad). I don't think I'd put him in Kubrick territory, but he's consistently good.

5. As usually happens with the members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences,....
the current nominations and awards have less to do with recent work than the career work.

Fincher may or may not be worthy of a best picture nomination for "The Social Network", but his past work is certainly worthy of recognition.

To paraphrase the great Ron Washington (manager of the Texas Rangers), "That's the way Hollywood go.".

6. It took a fairly esoteric subject and made it a compelling narrative
with some fascinating conflict. I completely loved it.
