"I can sleep until the crack of noon, midnight howlin' at the moon....goin' out when I want to and comin' home when I please..." (unfortunately this video didn't include the funnier than hell monologue before it)

1. He's funnier than hell, period...
...he did a killer cameo on one of Martin Mull's comedy albums years ago ("I'm Everyone I've Ever Loved"), when he was at his "Heart of Saturday Night / Nighthawks At The Diner" early-career peak.

Martin Goes And Does Where It's At

MM: Hey buddy, excuse me!
TW: Yeah yeah...
MM: Can I get you over here for a second? I have...
TW: Hold your horses, man. I'm busier than a set of jumper cables at a Puerto Rican wedding, man.
WAITRESS: I need a Mai Tai, a Brandy Alexander and a draught, light.
TW: Yeah yeah yeah...
MM: I could use another one though. I don't usually do this. It's just that... I'm in the music business. You ever get anybody in here from...
TW: Yeah well. Things are tough all over, man. What else is new?
MM: Yeah... Today my company made me do a disco record. I mean, it's just... As I said, I don't usually do this. I'd really like another one, if that's all right. You don't mind pennies, do you?
TW: Oh, we can always use pennies.
MM: Oh, fantastic. Wait... (the sound of a shitload of pennies being thrown on the counter)
MM: I think I eh... I think I got enough there for a double.
TW: I think you got enough there for a funeral.

3. Saw Waits only once, when Nighthawks was the new album...
near the end of the show (Quiet Knight in Chicago) he said he was going to look for an all-night liquor store and if he couldn't find one, he'd just go to Walgreens and get a six pack of Absorbine Junior and some ice.

He's a true madman genius.

P.S. on a vaguely similar topic...had the pleasure of seeing Waits' old compadre Chuck E. Weiss (and The Goddam Liars) once too; at the Central (later the Viper Room) in the early 90's .

P.S. part deux....pretty cool that he mentions Raphael's Silver Cloud lounge in Nighthawks too......I've actually played there (for many years it was a funky old roadhouse between Albuquerque and Santa Fe)

6. Saw Waits open for Zappa when he had the George Duke / Napoleon Murphy Brock lineup

Circle Star Theater in San Carlos, front row (which means I was about ten feet away from the edge of the revolving stage).

The announcer said that the opening act had been "personally selected by Frank" and asked the audience to be cool, sit back, and enjoy him, and we got about a half hour of solo Tom Waits.

I believe he only had the first album out at the time.

As a Tom Waits fan who doesn't need any convincing regarding his genius, I was STILL COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY by his improv sparring match with Iggy Pop in the film "Coffee and Cigarettes"...the whole clip used to be on YouTube, but sadly, it looks like only snippets remain.

5. Here's the spoken-word intro -- probably one of the funniest bits I've ever heard from him...
