Foods you hated as a kid but tolerate/like now?
When I was a kid I hated spinach and sweet potatoes. I remember sitting there with them in my mouth refusing to chew or swallow them. Tonight we had sweet potato breakfast burritos and they weren't bad at all.

Did you have any foods you hated when you were a kid but kind of like now?

4. Fried eggs.
Hated them so much as a kid that just the smell of them would make me gag. I had trouble going out to restaurants during breakfast because all the eggs that other people around me were eating would make me so nauseated that I couldn't eat.

Age 18, I was sitting in my little studio apartment one night and suddenly had a really strong craving for a fried egg. I couldn't believe it and tried to ignore it for two hours, to no avail. Eventually I went and made myself a fried egg. I cautiously took a little tiny bite, and lo and behold, it was pretty good! So I ate the rest of it. Never had a problem with eggs or the smell of eggs since! I have a fried egg about 3 times a week now.

As a kid, I would only eat scrambled or hard-boiled. Now, my Sunday egg is usually over-easy, although, sometimes I'll poach it.

Cooking can destroy the flavor and really turn them rancid though.

75. For me it was gradual as I got older, but I remember subtle changes in high school and college
My mother used to complain about how much of a picky eater I was and now my father is by far the pickiest in the family. I think young children (often) simply have childish tastebuds. But I think out of force of habit, they outgrow them a lot later than they should.

When I finally realized things like "lettuce and tomato give my hamburger texture and extra juice" or "bell peppers really give my fajitas a great crunch" I couldn't understand why I had always pushed those things off to the side in the first place.

I loved spinach as a kid, directly because of Popeye...not sure I would've liked it otherwise.

As far as the OP, i'd have to say pickles, hated them as a kid - like them now, but they have to be fresh and crispy, like deli pickles...I still don't like those limp neon green slices floating in formaldehyde.

and I'm still picky about that

I didn't like things mixed, like in casseroles or as Chan mentioned - pasta sauce! I could pick out the meat and eat that on the side, but I didn't want that shit on my noodles.

I still hate things like nuts, raisins, or olives mixed into other foods.

I hated mushrooms until 2002, now I can eat them fine although they aren't something I intentionally seek out.

I disliked not just specific things, like brussells sprouts, or yams; but whole classes of food, including almost all cheese; and anything with a white sauce, like mayonnaise, or bleu cheese dressing. I didn't start eating pizza, or mac & cheese, until I was a teenager. I don't think I had a cheeseburger until my late teens; and no burger with any sort of mayo or creamy sauce (like a Big Mac) until I was in my 20s.

59. We kids, when small, would hide the canned spinach bites under the rug.
We were fed while we were lying on the rug in front of the radio, listening to Lone Ranger and shows like that,
while the parents ate at a side table, so my brother would do a distraction, I would hide my bite, then I would cover for him, he stuffed his spinach under the rug, etc.

I remember we did all this at a young age, and without ever discussing it.

Later when we were older and had dogs, life got easier at dinner time.

I hated the smell of parmesan cheese, and I wouldn't go near pizza in my youth because of the smell of parmesan cheese. I still don't really like parmesan and still don't think of it as a good smell or appetizing smell. But I can tolerate it if a little is sprinkled on pizza or spaghetti.

58. The invention of fresh food has helped my tolerance a lot
Growing up in the 60's we had the great miracle of canned vegetables. Spinach, Mustard Greens, Corn. All from cans and all had nasty slimy texture and horrid taste.

As an adult I have learned to enjoy fresh spinach, either cooked or not. Corn on the cob the way nature made it. Other greens mostly raw.

Oddly enough, I have always liked liver.

69. Bell peppers.
Hated them. Used to HATE when my Mom made stuffed bell peppers for dinner.

Now? Raw, stuffed, grilled... gimme more bell peppers!

71. We have them growing too.
My favorite is to cut them in half and put them on the grill open side up, then pour some teriyaki into the bowl shape. I put them over an unlit burner on the grill so they don't burn and just let them sit until the meat is done.

Damn yummy.

73. Yep me too, my dad still doesn't like them as an adult
And I never understood why. They have an extremely mild taste of their own but a wonderful texture and they are very juicy. They taste like whatever you cook them in. I love me some green bell pepper/Pepperoni pizza, but I have a hard time finding other people who will eat it. I think they're under the impression that the bell peppers are spicy.

74. Bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, broccoli
I still have a caveat that onions need to be cooked (preferably grilled or sauteed but I don't mind boiled in a soup or baked in an oven as long as they aren't overpowering). Broccoli is a new one I'm starting to like, but it needs to have some kind of sauce to balance out the taste.
