What's the weirdest thing you ever saw printed on a restaurant menu?
A few years back, there was a new Chinese restaurant in town. One of the "Chef's Special Dishes" was listed as "Chicken in a Strange-Tasting Sauce" -- the description was "stir-fried breast of chicken and Chinese vegetables in a strange-tasting sauce."

Wasn't brave enough to order it. Only ate there once, the food was not good, and the place only lasted about a year. But I took one of the menus (just paper, they had stacks of them) because I was so amused by this little blurb (simple things for simple minds, I guess).

Always did wonder about that "strange-tasting sauce", though. I wondered if it was a bad translation from the original Chinese? Maybe they got a 6th grader to do translate the menu?

1. Mystery Coated Chicken ...
We figured it was chicken that fell on the floor and deep fried it.

3. In a similar vein, when I lived in a Dominican neighborhood in NYC,
the local Chinese joint made a valiant effort to translate its menu into Spanish.

But it was obviously done word-for-word, as evidenced by the emergence of the instant fusion classic "Moo Goo Gai Cacerola"!

4. "Happy Freshness Fishes of Life"
A sushi restaurant that I used to favor described the Rainbow Roll as "a California roll wrapped in the happy freshness fishes of life," referring to the salmon, tuna, and yellowtail sashimi on top of the California roll. Not weird in quite the same way as "strange tasting sauce," but I always got a kick out of it.

And it was wonderful. :)

6. Like yours, we had a Chinese place that had "Chicken in Brown Sauce"
The name didn't do it justice, it was actually a really good dish. MrsCoffee dared me to order it, and once I did, I was hooked.

10. A local pizza place had a supreme pizza
In the description of said pizza, the menu assured me that it was "truly a wizard's delight!" (This was not a medieval/wizard/anything themed restaurant.) So random it made me LOL every time I saw it.

19. Was it at a buffet?
I have seen that policy at buffets, because if it isn't stated some people will take advantage.

Doesn't make any sense at all, unless they were just too cheap/lazy to supply take-out containers/bags.

17. Buckys restaurant - Finderne New Jersey (don't know if it's still in
business) was Chinese and Italian with Chinese dishes on one side of the menu, Italian on the other. I ordered something Italian and it wasn't very good. Don't know about the Chinese. Just a weird concept all around.

26. LOL Bucky's seems like such an unlikely name for
a Chinese-Italian restaurant. Ciao Mein at least shows that the owner has a sense of humor and some creativity. Cute.

18. Fried Giant Beings
On the menu of a small restaurant in Greece. I didn't have the courage to try them, and probably would have been greatly disappointed if all I got was a plate of fava beans (with a nice Chianti).

Soup Du Jour:

Gotta love any restaurant that has a Dumb & Dumber reference printed on the menu!
