It's fun to see Robert Montgomery as a handsome leading man and not the kindly elderly Marcus Welby. He is in the movie playing now. Frank Morgan is as well. (The Wizard from Oz.) The Last of Mrs. Cheyney.

...adopted it to seem more highbrow. It wasn't just on the screen -- people just spoke differently then than they do now. Listen to the old newscasters, and listen to old interviews with regular peeps.
