There is a William Powell marathon on TCM....
Every thing except the Thin Man.

My Man Godfrey, a movie about the forgotten men of the Depression as well as the forgetable people roaming about the upper caste....

It's fun to see Robert Montgomery as a handsome leading man and not the kindly elderly Marcus Welby. He is in the movie playing now. Frank Morgan is as well. (The Wizard from Oz.) The Last of Mrs. Cheyney.

6. Thanks! I'll tune in. I have a
question that I hope someone here can answer: Why do so many of the actors (both men and women) in old movies have a quasi English accent, even when the actors are Americans portraying Americans?

...adopted it to seem more highbrow. It wasn't just on the screen -- people just spoke differently then than they do now. Listen to the old newscasters, and listen to old interviews with regular peeps.

Our language and speech have undergone a transition.

9. another example
Waltons.

Think Coralee -- the city cousin. Very precise speech, highbrow pronunciations and inflections.

The others: not so much.

12. Robert Montgomery was Elizabeth Montgomery's father. Robert Young was Dr. Welby.
That said, I think they are all great, especially William Powell.

14. Uh, Robert YOUNG was Marcus Welby. No? Before that...
He was 'Father Knows Best'.
Geezers remember stuff like that.
We just can't find our glasses or the car keys.

15. Powell planned to marry Jean Harlow.
"In 1935, he starred with Jean Harlow in Reckless. Soon it developed into a serious romance, but Harlow died at the age of 26 in June 1937, before they could marry. His distress over her death, as well as his own battle with colon cancer around the same time, caused him to accept fewer acting roles."

Nominated for best actor Academy Award 3 times.
Never won.
He should have.
