Brad Pitt to present BBC radio documentary on Nick Drake.
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 08:23 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
The world no longer makes any sense.

The documentary is broadcast on May 22 at 9pm.

Pitt said: "I was introduced to Nick Drake's music about five years ago, and am a huge admirer of his records.

"When Radio 2 approached me to get involved in this project, I was delighted to be asked and pleased that I was able to fit it into my schedule."

2. It always amazes me who turns out to be a fan of Nick Drake.
For a guy who's been dead thirty years and sold approximately three records when he was alive, he has a pretty diverse fanbase.

4. 5 years? So basically when Pink Moon was in a commercial...
Which would be around 5 years ago. So basically I'm guessing that's what he means.

5. Not being an owner of his
original album releases I was intrigued by "Pink Moon" and found info on the Volkswagen site about Nick Drake. I have enjoyed his music ever since and would otherwise probably not have heard of him. Did you buy one of his original releases? A fan from the start of his career?

6. I was. I was a fan from before I was born. In fact.
I was a fan before Nick Drake was born. I was just waiting for him to exist, so I could say 'LOOK! I AM THE FIRST GUY WHO WAS INTO THIS GUY, AND THUS I AM SUPERIOR!' In fact, when he was alive (before my birth), I bought up all his records so that no one else but me could claim to have heard of him. I AM FANBOY SUPREME, COWER AND TREMBLE BEFORE MY GENIUS!

14. Were you not the same with the Moz?
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 09:42 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
Were you not watching the birth announcements of the Greater Manchester area in the late 1950's watching out for the child who would one day be Stephen Patrick Morrissey?

18. I've known about him and been a fan since the late 80's...
...a friend turned me on to him.

Actually my post wasn't meant to disparage people who found out about him through the commercial. I'm all in favor actually of good music being included in commercials and turning people on to that type of stuff.

But presenting Brad Pitt as some sort of uber fan to narrate a special on the guy just seems a bit disingenuous.

23. How is it disingenous?
Given the quality of Nick Drake's music, is it not entirely possible that someone could become a huge fan in 5 years? It's not like he has a huge back catalog to go through to weed out the true gems (although Nick wrote quite a few gems).

Disingenuous would be if Brad Pitt had never heard of Nick Drake before and the BBC presented him as huge fan.

24. Hey...its just an opinion....
feel free to disagree (clearly you do). It just seems like to me they are picking a marquee name over someone who may be a musician or a long-time Drake fan who may be able to provide a bit more insight into the man, his music, and his life.

It's not the end of the world, it's just my opinion that he is a bad choice for such a project.
