But if they're going to ban something I would rather it be a blanket ban on swear words than just to pick out one word. I mean seriously, if we're looking at it as a civility issue and most swear words are offensive to someone then all things being equal I would go that route. But with a very heavy heart.

..who said anything about banning anything? I was just saying that it would be really interesting to conduct a poll that showed how many actually understood the issue up for discussion. I say this because no one has proposed an outright ban on anything, but everyone keeps talking as if they have, so it seems to me that people don't really know what they're talking about.


Besides, from what I understand I'm not allowed to insult you, right? Isn't that a ban? Is it fascism that I can't call another poster an ignorant asshole?

We accept all sorts of restrictions on here already. This is not new.

EVERY thread on this has been a satire thread. NONE OF THIS has been taken seriously.

The reason for that seems to be in part that no one really understand what they're talking about. I can totally laugh at myself, believe me, I have no sacred cows, and truth be told I'm not even that big on banning the word - I initially argued against it...until I realized no one was proposing that.

That's my problem. It's funny, yeah, ha ha, but no one seems know or even care what it is they're talking about, and that's frustrating, because it reflects the total lack of concern people here have for others, specifically women.


Make fun of X all you want. Don't let the fact that the issue is actually Y get in the way.

I've ignored every reference to "bitch" since yesterday. It's gotten tedious. I even crossed the street this morning to avoid a man walking his dog, just in case.

This poll, on the other hand, is in reaction to ALL the "ban this, ban that" stuff that has been popping up -- not just over the past couple of days, but over the past couple of weeks. And not just at DU, but all around us.

Anyway, regardless of how one feels about the -- you know, that poll pinned at the top of GD -- I'm sure one can fairly easily realize that some of this crap has gotten out-of-hand.

And yes, I was thinking specifically of the bitch threads, since this sort of mocking is consistent with how I saw others in those discussions being treated (which is part of why I decided to join them, too, I might add). Of course, again, it shouldn't be related since that didn't really involve a ban.

Anyway, I'm not familiar with whatever else ban stuff has been going on, at least not on DU. Now that you mention it, though, I hadn't even thought about how people's feelings about indecency and the rest might tie into their reaction to their misunderstanding of Skinner's proposal. Interesting point.
