Demand full story on Rove, leak
The bottom of page A2 finally contained a start on the story of who leaked an active Central Intelligence Agency officer's name to the press two years ago ("Rove discussed CIA operative with Time reporter," July 11).
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove seems to have told reporters that a diplomat's wife was the operative at the CIA who had authorized her husband's trip to Niger to look into whether that country sold uranium to Saddam Hussein, as Bush claimed in his State of the Union address in 2003.
The diplomat, Joseph C. Wilson IV, made the trip and came back to publicly state that there was no evidence for this allegation that the Bush administration had included as part of its justification for going to war in Iraq.
When the intelligence officer's name was leaked, ending her ability to work as a covert agent, Bush himself claimed that the White House would get to the bottom of the matter.
Now, two years later, evidence points to Rove as the man responsible. While one reporter has been jailed and another reporter was threatened with jail in the investigation, Rove's attorney claims Rove signed a waiver "authorizing prosecutors to speak to any reporters Rove had previously engaged in discussion."
The presence of this waiver is touted as proof that Rove had nothing to hide. Nothing to hide -- two years later. This story demands further exposure and development.

Pink slips all around The Bush administration promised in 2003 that if anyone in the administration was involved in leaking the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame, that person "would no longer be in this administration." Now it is time for President Bush to fulfill that promise and fire Karl Rove.
President Bush also promised to restore honor and dignity to the White House. He should begin that task by firing Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for the terrible advice they have given him. They have led us into a disastrous war in Iraq.

Identity revealed in retaliation Those who discuss the dangers of jailing a reporter for refusing to disclose sources seem to forget the reasons that reporters have for ensuring that sources remain secret. The main reason is to protect whistleblowers and those who report problems in an administration.
As far as I know, there is no right to secrecy for those intentionally committing crimes. Although some question whether a crime was committed, citing technicalities, it is clear that the reason for leaking Valerie Plame's undercover CIA work was not to expose wrongdoing in the CIA or to provide public information relevant to weapons of mass destruction. Those who orchestrated the leak had one intent: to damage Plame's career in retribution for something that her husband did.

Columnist escapes scrutiny Judith Miller, a reporter for The New York Times who never wrote about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, sits in jail for failing to discuss sources for her research in the matter, while journalist Robert Novak, the man who wrote the original column exposing Plame, enjoys his freedom and is largely free from questioning.
What is going on here? Why aren't the media more closely scrutinizing Novak's role? Shouldn't the man who actually outed Plame, with the aid of illegal government leaks, be under more pressure than Miller, who was significantly removed from the initial crime?

Public may end up in dark There is already fallout from the jailing of reporter Judith Miller for her refusal to cooperate with a federal prosecutor, who is investigating the illegal disclosure of the identity of a covert operative for the Central Intelligence Agency.
The editor of a major newspaper, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, said last week that the newspaper will not publish two major investigative articles because they were based on illegally leaked documents. Yet "they would have been of significant interest to the public." The editor fears publication could lead to legal prosecution of the paper and the reporters.
Given the Bush administration's obsession with secrecy, the public may end up in the dark about things it should really know. An informed public is the best guarantor of true democracy.

Rove no stranger to dirty work

Karl Rove exemplifies that old saw, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks."
As the White House bobs and weaves and tries to minimize the treasonous outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame, allegedly by top Bush adviser Karl Rove, people should remember it isn't the first time Rove has used columnist Robert Novak to do dirty work.
Way back in 1992, George H.W. Bush's presidential campaign fired Rove for trashing solidly Republican and dedicated Bush advocate Robert Mosbacher Jr., who at the time was working as the head money-raiser for the campaign. Rove accomplished this trashing by planting a negative story with -- who else -- good ol' Bob Novak.
But the Bush folks quickly determined that Rove had fed the dirt to Novak, and Rove got his walking papers.
So, Rove's most recent behavior should come as no surprise, especially to those tunnel-vision Republicans who think George W. Bush walks on water as he does his best to destroy America.

Stop partisan posturing. The newspaper fails to inform readers about important aspects regarding former Ambassador Joseph Wilson IV's report regarding potential sales of partially processed uranium ore (yellowcake) from Niger. Wilson's report did state that a suspected sale had not occurred. This was widely reported.
Not reported was that he confirmed that a June 1999 meeting was held between the Niger prime minister and Iraqi officials, which the prime minister regarded as an indication of Iraqi intent to purchase yellowcake. This information confirmed other CIA intelligence reports that Iraq was pursuing a purchase from Niger and other African nations.
All this was fully disclosed and verified in the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report dated July 7, 2004 (http://intelligence.senate.gov/iraqreport2.pdf).
As to the role and/or guilt in the matter of "outing" Wilson's wife , if Karl Rove is guilty of a crime, he should suffer the consequences. However, contrary to the Democratic howling for his head, innocent until proven guilty is still the law of the land.
A grand jury is in session and testimony is being taken. Let the system work and stop the partisan posturing.

Rove deserves dismissal The Bush administration has taken a stance on the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame that is neither tenable nor respectful of the American people.
Even under a best-case circumstance, presidential adviser Karl Rove is guilty of a grave mistake that could be the cause of loss of American lives.
In the worst case, Rove is a traitor to our nation during wartime, a crime punishable by death according to the Constitution of the United States.
Under either circumstance or anything in between, the smallest amount of punishment should involve the loss of all security clearances and immediate dismissal.
Americans deserve better. CIA agents are public servants. America deserves leadership that views them as essential and accords them the appropriate respect.

GOP should admit mistake If the Republican Party cannot bring itself to admit wrong is wrong, it is going to find itself on the outside looking in for years to come.
Blowing the cover of a CIA agent is clearly wrong. Exposing Valerie Plame endangered not only her and her family but also everyone she ever contacted, the CIA front company that served as her cover, everyone else who listed that company as an employer and everyone whom any foreign government can connect to that company. The initial leak may have simply been a bad mistake by people who did not really think through the ramifications of what they were doing. But by denying any involvement for two years, and now saying they did nothing wrong, it clearly goes beyond a simple mistake and into the unbelievable situation of placing party over national security.
I am amazed that anyone -- much less government and elected officials -- wants to be identified as approving of this.
Puppet master tangled up It seems that Karl Rove, the master puppeteer, has his hands full these days. He has one hand up the back of President Bush controlling his mouth and the other one caught in a cookie jar full of allegations that he identified an undercover CIA agent.
These charges, if proven true, are serious felonies that carry long prison sentences.
It will be interesting to see if President Bush will pull some strings to free his puppet master's hand from the cookie jar.
