Not cynical enough....
DU is certainly cynical when it comes to dubya, but in my opinion, not cynical enough. I believe they are underestimating Rove, Cheney, and Co. when they wonder about an October surprise.
Way back in November when dubya came waltzing out with that turkey and trimmings in Iraq I told my boys "I guarantee that's a plastic turkey." I was right, not because it looked like one, but because I have come to expect these kinds of things from these turds at every turn.
My prediction now, you ask? Osama bin Laden has already been captured by a small group of top secret special forces and is being guarded in a remote cave somewhere. To maintain this secrecy they had to kill everyone around bin Laden and are now simply waiting for, hmmmmm, September.....about the time of their convention. They will have a jumbotron set up at ground zero for the entertainment of the faithful and parade him around in chains. October would be a little too obvious. Telling the media recently that they are stepping up plans to capture him is just a smokescreen.
I also predicted long ago that dubya will skydive and float into ground zero with an American Flag parachute and Lee 'the chickenhawk' Greenwood singing...well, whatever that song is that he
sings.....
Also, gw will be packing heat and when he lands they will roll out an animal cage containing Sadaam Hussein and dubya will fill him full of holes as everyone sings 'God Bless America'.
Gives you goosebumps just thinking about it, huh?

3. If they pull it off ...
it will be a slam dunk Bush victory with +3 in the Senate.

The reality of incumbency.

4. Point's been made
I'm not arguing with your point. I'm just disagreeing with your contention that "we're not cynical enough." I think you'll find a spectrum of cynicism here that sweeps well past what you're describing, all the way into LIHOP and MIHOP territory (That's Let It Happen On Purpose and Make It Happen On Purpose, as regarding 9/11, if you don't know).

The Spanish Bombs seep to re-orient the chessboard vis-a-vis the relationship between terrorist activities and elections. On the one hand, liberals like ourselves (correctly) see a repudiation of a failed Spanish policy, and the legitimate rejection of that policy. Conservatives see a terrorist "victory" and see "proof" that Iraq was "behind" 9/11.

What does this mean when applied to the U.S.? On the one hand it means that Conservatives will argue that a rejection of Bush in November directly means a "terrorist victory." I can see this idea getting traction amongst those who don't think very clearly. On the other hand, the actual voters in the USA may look at Spain and realize that they can reject Bush as easily as Spain rejected Aznar.

What concerns me is ballot-box tampering in Bush's favor, explained away by the talking heads as a "sudden" burst of support for Bush in the wake of the Spanish Bombs and possibly whatever October surprise you're discussing.

We may be wrong; we may miss the point, but the problem isn't a lack of cynicism, believe me.

5. They just need to watch a little more CNN coverage of the latest

"Al Qaeda" bombing in Baghdad. That should get them up to speed.

6. Based on recent events...
...it seems the (possible) capture of Bin Laden hasn't done much to quell terrorist attacks (see Spain, Iraq). So why would holding onto Usuma for several more months help Bush? I believe we're going to see a hell of a lot more bombings by terrorists in the next three months (obviously, I'm not saying this to those of you who believe that the U.S. and/or Mossad are behind these recent killings), and I think these terrorist-attacks-yet-to-come can only hurt Bush's re-election bid. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that my logic is correct, why would their holding onto him for many months help Bush? This isn't a rhetorical question. If anyone has some thoughts on this I'd love to hear them. They may very well have Bin Laden and are gonna spring him on us next Fall. But this strikes me as dumb.
