Why so much VP talk?

Obama just got the nomination to go up against McCain. You'd think this would be the time for real, serious discussion about policy differences between the two. I can understand why the MSM is talking about VP stuff--they go for whatever is simple and exciting at the moment. But why are WE here doing the same thing?
