WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record) said on Monday he will not jump into the Democratic race for the White House in 2004, saying his campaign would be "a long shot" and he can wield the most influence in the Senate.

"At this moment, my instincts tell me that the best way for me to work to enhance America's national security and to fight for economic security for the middle class is to remain in the United States Senate," Biden said in a statement.

The six-term Senate veteran, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1988, had been contemplating joining the nine Democrats vying for the right to challenge President Bush (news - web sites) in 2004 and had promised a decision by early September.

He said in his statement he had taken "a long and hard look" at the possibility of a White House run.

1. This is good news
Scratch him off the list. Now it is only the question if Clark runs or not.

4. Agreed very good news
I would hate to see his chair on the armed services comitee go to someone else. he has a lot of pull there and does a very good job overall there IMHO.

I still say he would make a good VP though

2. Biden was never going to run
It's frankly too late to start a presidential campaign for this cycle.

3. Biden' His Time for A Vee-pee Appointment?
His decision not to run sounded suspiciously like a campaign speech...
