Mindful of Red Sox, Kerry keeps it brief
Conscious of the Red Sox-Yankees game later that evening, Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry brought an abbreviated campaign message to a warmly receptive audience in The Weirs on Monday.

"Here’s the deal," the junior U.S. senator from Massachusetts told about 80 people gathered at the Weirs Community Center, "I want to get you all out of here for the Red Sox."

<snip>

He was running for the Oval Office, said Kerry, because Bush was taking American in a "radically wrong direction" on a number of issues, including health care.

Kerry criticized Bush’s go-it-alone approach to international affairs, most notably on the war in and reconstruction of Iraq; Bush’s tax cuts which he said benefit the wealthy; and on Bush’s failure to fund education.

The president has also been remiss in tending to the economy, said Kerry, who promised, "I’m going to put people back to work in America."

Kerry said he supported a domestic energy policy that emphasized renewable fuels and creating energy independence.

4. I'm sure you're right about that
This kind of stuff:

Bush, said Kerry, has bungled the dispute with North Korea over its nuclear arms program; has been unresponsive to the AIDS epidemic in Africa and had snubbed the world community by pulling the U.S. out of efforts to reach an understanding and action plan on global warming.

Touting his experience in foreign affairs, Kerry said the country needs an "engaged" president who can deal with issues in other parts of the world.

important as it may be, is not likely to get the audience cheering.
