The Ed Schultz Show
Looks like Mike Malloy has been replaced with Ed Schultz on Sirus Left. What can you tell me about him?

2. He tried to get on in DC but the station wouldn't
accept the $$$$ offered. (Got this secondhand from Lars Larson,
RWingNut host. I've been gloating to him about Randi's syndication
deal.)

3. Randi On Air America
Randi said that Mr. Schultz treated her with little respect when they met some time ago. Now, he can ponder his previous inept comments while Randi takes it to "W" on "AIR AMERICA" in afternoon drive following Mr. Franken.http://therandirhodesshow.com/todays_show.html

6. Not surprising
Ed Schultz is widely thought of up here (in ND/MN where he's been doing local radio and TV for a number of years) as a bit of a jerk. He used to be a conservative jerk. He converted into a liberal a couple years ago, but I'm not sure if he stopped being an obnoxious jerk. I've listened to both Randi Rhodes and the liberal version of Ed Schultz, and I think Rhodes is much better. If you have Sirius and you want to listen to good liberal talk during the afternoon, I would suggest switching to OutQ and listening to Michelangelo Signorile.

8. Schultz
Ok, some background on Schultz and how he got where he is. Someone has to post something substantive...sheesh.

He is the most listened to guy in the Dakotas, as well as large portions of Minnesota, Montana, and even a couple Canadian provinces. He has alot of clout in the north. Democratic big wig Tom Daschle of South Dakota recognizes this, so it's not surprising he gets on good terms with Schultz. Schultz spends alot of time in Washington and gets to know all the major Democratic figures... Hillary Clinton most notably, perhaps. I mean he would talk to these people "alot" on his radio program... a tiny market, compared to florida, new york, or something, and yet he gets these interviews(generally very good republic damning interviews btw). I always thought that was impressive. Schultz strikes me as someone who is good at making inroads and establishing connections. He saw an opportunity(a big void democratic radio), people who could do things for him(Daschle, Dorgan, Konrad, Clinton, etc.), and simply went for it.

The Rhodes/Schultz comparisons are counterproductive. They come from opposite ends of the spectrum(Florida vs Dakotas), so I don't see them in direct competition. Besides, they are both democrats. Is it not more important to draw people away from Hannity and Limbaugh? The conservative talkers seem to coexist just fine...

Oh, and simple statements like "jerk" or "said something bad to Rhodes" aslo have little value. Got any specifics?

9. Are you from North Dakota or Northwest MN?
If so, you've probably heard that there's quite a few people who have less than favorable opinions of him. He ranked as the second most hated sports figure in North Dakota in a poll by Sports Illustrated. (Link)
People find him cocky, arrogant, and obnoxious. Ever since leaving WDAY, he's had a fued with them and with the Forum which I just find annoying. He used to be a conservative for quite a while, and he'd make obnoxious comments like many of the other conservative talkers. For example, he'd refer to North Dakota's three Democratic congressman as the three stooges. His politics have changed over the last couple years, and maybe he has changed as a person, too. I don't know. But I think his style still sounds too much like Rush, and I don't care for that. I do think he puts on a good show sometimes, though, because of the guests he has and the topics they discuss, but I don't find him as interesting or as intelligent as other liberal talkers like Rhodes. Oh, and he's the most listened to guy in the Dakotas because he's on mid-mornings on KFGO. It's been the dominant station in the market my entire life. Ed didn't create the audience, he just held the audience that was already there, and I think people listen to the local show more because of the talk about local and regional issues.

10. Schultz
KFGO is just one station in Fargo, so how does Schultz get broadcast on 4 or 5 other stations across the Dakotas if he starts with an audience "already there" with no potential for growth? No, Schultz started a show mornings on KFGO, sucked listeners away from WDAY and other stations, thus proving his popularity...or penchant for generating controversy if you will. Schultz grows, gets broadcast from Aberdeen South Dakota, and buddies up with Tom Daschle... Connection? I think so.

And, like Limbaugh, Schultz definitely can be obnoxious and somewhat of a bully with his callers. He's good at pushing buttons and creating heated debate. He makes a target of himself while making fun of others... It's not low-key radio, but it works, and is entertaining...

11. One more thing...
One more comment about radio in Fargo.

KFGO 11:00am-2:00 pm Rush Limbaugh
WDAY 2:00pm-5:00 pm Sean Hannity

The republicans know how to work together to control the airwaves. It will take a concerted effort "by all" the democratic voices to make any sort of impact...

12. Here's the actual poll numbers:
Brett Favre 36%
Ed Schultz 5%
George Steinbrenner 5%

A bit overblown, maybe.
