Christians are in no danger
Let us now thank Jerry Falwell for providing us more of this "Pity me" bullshit that conservative Christians love to shovel.

Falwell begins his column by claiming "Recent circumstances have led me to believe that Christians in America are increasingly at risk of becoming not just perpetual objects of ridicule, but potentially of being openly persecuted and punished for their beliefs by those pressing the absurd “tolerance” agenda." So, Christians are being persecuted, huh? And what are his examples of this? People criticizing President Bush for bringing God into his decision to pursue the war in Iraq. Besides the fact that I would not consider the war a true Christian endeavor, Bush just brings his religion too far into his public discussions, which is highly inappropriate for someone who is supposed to be representing the entire country, not just its Christian citizens. Therefore, I can't say I blame Bush's critics for taking him to task on his manifold attempts to integrate church and state, provided that those critics do not disparage the Christian faith. That said, such criticism--harsh though it may often be--does not even approach "persecution."

1. Christians are persecuted, huh?
Gee, never once was a persecuted for being a Christian, but when I became an atheist, shit started hitting the fan!

Check out this link to see just how absurd Jerry Falwell's claims are: Life in our Anti-Christian America.

I hate the fundy persecution complex. It is SO not based in reality.

16. Actually
what they seem to be complaining about when they are complaining about being persecuted is that they cant harrass and persecute people who dont believe their way.

2. Another One
Another fundie besmirching my religion. I hate seeing it. These "give me money or America will be doomed to the pits of hell" evangelists are nothing more than an embarassment to Christianity. True Christianity teaches to love, not hate.

If you want to read more about the dangers of men like Falwell, Robertson, etc. I HIGHLY recommend the excellent book "Close Encounters With The Religious Right" by Robert Boston (an Assistant Director of "Americans United for Separation of Church And State")

9. May those "Christians" be persecuted
Edited on Sat May-01-04 09:47 AM by amber dog democrat
to the ends of the earth. Falwell , Pat Robertson, the Christian Coillition members are about as un Christ like as they can get. In a perfect world they would be unmasked for the charletans and frauds they are.

So much for our "Christian" non elected president too.

So who would Jesus bomb? What countries would Christ invade? Who would Jesus kill? What would Jesus think about the death penalty? It makes you wonder.

How many social programs would Jesus cut to make room for tax breaks for billionaires?

11. Playing and feeleing as the victim
Edited on Mon May-03-04 12:32 PM by Homer12
Is the tool that evangelicals and the right-wing use to make their unthinkning flocks feel abused and self-rightoues.

After all for a born-again zombie christian to be persecuted and die a martyr's death, Like Jesus Christ, is what mnay of them wish for. A form of sick hero whorship if you will.

Not to much different than fundamentalist islamic thought.

13. I'll believe Christians are persecuted
The moment a US President says they don't deserve to be citizens, like Poppy Bush said about athiests/agnostics. Until then they can STFU.

19. Let's see - Churches don't have to pay property taxes on the land
land the building is sitting on, even though they have the benefit of police and fire protection like everyone else. Yeah, that is persecution alright. By the way, Jerry, gluttony and bearing false witness (remember the Clinton Chronicles?) are sins, according to your Bible.

21. Pat Robertson was saying this ten years ago or more
Back in those days, I was on AOL, and a fundamentalist on one of the discussion boards claimed, "Christians today are as persecuted as Jews were in Nazi Germany."

I recognized this as a Pat Robertson quote, so I got out my copy of The Diary of Anne Frank and found the passage in which she lists all the restrictions that Jews were under in Nazi-occupied Holland. I asked the poster if anyone had forced him to wear a yellow cross, fired him from his job, forbidden him to drive or ride a bicycle, thrown his children out of school, required him to shop only during certain hours, or banned books, movies, and music by Christians.

I added that if Pat Robertson was claiming that Christians were being persecuted like that, he was either a liar or too stupid to be believed. Which did the poster think was the case? :-)
