San Francisco to conduct study on 'tidal energy'

Tue Jun 19, 3:31 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - The possibility of using tidal
power to generate clean energy is to be explored in a
study undertaken by San Francisco authorities and
utilities, it was announced Tuesday.

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company inked an agreement
with San Francisco officials and the Golden Gate Energy
Company to investigate whether swirling tides in San
Francisco Bay could one day be used to create electricity.

A statement said the 12-month study would be the "most
comprehensive" examination ever conducted into the
possibility of using tidal forces to provide clean, zero-
emission energy.

It said if initial feedback was positive it could lead to the
development of a full-scale commercial project.

1. I really do wonder what we are going to do when the seas begin to rise....
Sometimes I have these weird dream-nightmares-visions of dams in the bay, and there's no ferry to Alcatraz because it's just a Muni stop, or else you can simply walk across the dam, because the view of the Golden Gate is fantastic on a clear day.

2. Kick, because tidal energy is bad for fragile coastal environments.
