Eskom stops exporting electricity
Eskom has stopped supplying electricity to neighbouring countries amid the dire shortage in South Africa, it said on Sunday.

The power company only sold electricity when it had a surplus, said spokesperson Sipho Neke.

"When we don't have enough capacity for domestic use we don't sell electricity. There is no surplus so there are no exports," he said.

Of the electricity generated by Eskom, 95 percent is used locally. The rest exported to Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

1. Gee. I hope this doesn't effect Germany's coal orders.
It would be terrible if the Germans built all those coal stations and there was no coal to deliver.

2. I bet Gazprom will be happy to sell them some NG.
For a modest fee.

4. In spite of buying the German government outright, Gazprom, I predict, won't
have the gas.

I mean it's not like Gazprom invested a lot in buying the Chancellor. They got him for a mere 300,000 euors per year, pocket change.

SA goes from blackouts to quotas

January 21 2008 at 05:53AM

By Jillian Green and Anna Cox

South Africans could soon be faced with electricity quotas. Speaking to The Star on Sunday, Jacob Maroga, Eskom's chief executive, revealed that the parastatal was working on a plan which would see household and private industry usage being rationed.

...

The short-term solution, he said, lay with consumers reducing consumption by 10 percent.

Eskom is investing in the rollout of energy-efficient globes and solar-power heating.

It is also discussing core generation - a process in which waste heat from industries is used for power generation.

Energy utility Eskom has invited customers to register on its site and receive incentives for using solar power as an alternative to coal generated electricity.

By visiting the incentive's scheme's online home on http://www.eskomdsm.co.za/swh_index.php customers can make the most of the sunshine that the country receives, and do their part to reduce the energy demand in the country.

Customers have been encouraged to visit the site for more information regarding the programme itself, the benefits of solar energy, how to size a system based on a household's needs and the types of solar power systems from which to chose.

Business people who supply solar power equipment have also been invited to take part in the scheme.

7. I'll bet that works as well as the Southern Californian plan.
The chief difference between South Africa and Southern California is that Southern California has no coal to export to Germany to satisfy the bizarre scientific illiteracy of anti-nukes.

Eskom gets ready to roll out solar water-heating programme

State-owned power utility Eskom's solar-powered water heater incentive programme, which was due to be rolled out soon, would only be launched on a national basis once there was registered suppliers in all main centres, it said on Tuesday.

Eskom was currently working on the programme and, although the timing was dependent on the suppliers providing all the necessary information, it was expected that the programme would be rolled out soon.

Since December, over 80 potential suppliers were asked to express interest in registering, Eskom said, adding that interest had also been seen from new entrants in the market, both locally and internationally.

The utility said that it was carefully managing the awareness around the programme so as to ensure that it was not creating a demand in the solar industry that could not be supplied.
