‘Built Green’ movement is picking up energy

Energy-efficient homes are becoming more popular in South Sound, according to the Olympia Master Builders.

The number of certified Built Green homes increased 250 percent last year and builders say the momentum probably has long-term staying power.

“Consumers want it,” said Scott Bergford, owner of Scott Homes, which has been building energy-efficient homes in South Sound for years. “You will see more and more builders come on board as more consumers demand it.”

Olympia Master Builders administers a voluntary program in which builders follow a checklist meant to design energy efficiency into homes. Once they complete the checklist, builders certify homes as Built Green.

1. This is good news
and the beauty is, if you can not afford to build new and green you can a bit at a time, revamp the home you have to make it greener.

Tri-City builders going green

Homes powered with solar energy, plumbed with self-composting toilets and topped with dirt roofs may seem a little far-fetched, but they'll soon be an option for local environmentally conscious homebuyers.

The Home Builders Association of Tri-Cities is launching a Built Green program to address the environmental impacts of housing construction.

"It's a comprehensive approach to building a house," said Jeff Losey, executive director of the HBA.

"We want to make sure builders can respond to consumer desire," he said.
