Iowans are being warned to put down the alfalfa sprouts because of an apparent bacterial infection tentatively linked to a Nebraska producer. The Iowa Department of Public Health said Tuesday that at least five Iowans had been sickened with salmonella recently, possibly because they ate tainted alfalfa sprouts. Four other suspected cases are being investigated.
Nebraska health officials also have identified several cases in their state, and they suspect the outbreak is linked to alfalfa sprouts from CW Sprouts of Omaha. Nebraska officials said the company has recalled its products and is cooperating with the investigation.
Three people, including one Iowan, have been hospitalized and released. Health department spokeswoman Polly Carver-Kimm said the Iowa cases were scattered across the state.
Officials recommended people either throw out any alfalfa sprouts they have or set them aside until more information is available. Nebraska officials said the company's products were shipped to restaurants and grocery stores.
