Hummer: RIP
General Motors announced on Friday that it was discontinuing the Hummer 1 and will stop selling them this summer. The oversized, gas-guzzling SUV, which makes a point of giving the finger to fuel efficiency, will soon be just a memory of overconsumption.

There was something nakedly aggressive about the Hummer. It didn't give a damn about gas mileage. It cared less about sharing the road. It had been developed to run people down on the battlefield, for god's sake. How could its owner be expected to show consideration when parking?

Even the Hummer commercials were aggressive, the most infamous showing a soap box derby racer cheating his way to victory in his Hummer-shaped box. The cheating, don't-give-a-damn about other people kid would be a Hummer owner when he was an adult, we were told. Isn't it great that he doesn't care what other people think about him?

1. They only sold 100 of them? I thought this was
the wealthy's biggest new toy and even limo companies had hummer-limos.

Just a hundred? Well their marketing campaign must have done a number on my brain.

2. this year
Only a 100 H1s so far this year. Don't forget the still-rampaging H2 and H3 that are still waiting to be hunted down and relegated to a museum somewhere.

3. Not surprising.
They never sold many, and the big push for the past couple of years has been the H2, which is 'smaller' :eyes:

What's really disappointing is that Toyota is now selling a remake of the jeep it sold in the 70s. They looked great on the site, but when I saw a few on the street it was pretty clear that the new Toyota is meant to compete directly with the H2. Don't know what the gas mileage is, but I doubt it's anything to smile about.

5. Yes, and the new H3 has just been released.
The H1 is the road-legal version of the military HUMVEE. This is the model that's being discontinued. It's the 'real man's' Hummer, huge, thirsty, uncomfortable, difficult to drive and totally impractical.

The H2 is the 'mid-sized' Hummer (if you can imagine such a thing) and is the model most often converted into stretch limousines. This is the 'pimp' Hummer driven by urban commandos in LA and New York, who want to show that, in addition to being macho, they are also very bling.

The H3 is the 'compact' Hummer, the Hummer 'for the rest of us' (assuming the rest of us are antisocial assholes). This is the wannabe Hummer, for those who can't afford the real thing but still want to participate in the Hummer lifestyle (rolling over on corners, killing small children, slurping gas, hogging the road).

So don't weep at the passing of the H1, everybody! The H2 and H3 will continue to be the SUV of choice for wealthy psychopaths.
