WASHINGTON (AFP) - Senior US lawmakers have expressed deep concern
in a letter to President George W. Bush over reports the United States
seeks to weaken a G8 declaration on climate change.
Fifteen heads of House committees cited reports that Bush administration
officials want to eliminate from the G8 document a pledge to limit the
global temperature rise to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, and to reduce 1990
levels of greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2050.
The lawmakers also voiced dismay at reports the government was trying
to delete parts of the declaration calling on industrialized countries to
modify global-warming linked activities, and to remove a reference to the
urgency of the problem.
"We are deeply concerned about reports that the United States is seeking
to weaken a proposed G8 declaration regarding global climate change,"
said their letter to Bush, dated May 18.
