More than two decades after Italian financier Roberto Calvi was found hanging from a London bridge, police say they have reopened the case of the man nicknamed "God's banker".
Calvi, who earned his soubriquet because of his close ties to the Vatican, was found hanged from scaffolding under London's Blackfriars Bridge on June 18, 1982 with bricks in his pockets and some $15,000 on his person.
A British coroner initially ruled his death a suicide, but a second coroner recorded an open verdict. Italian police said this year they believed he was murdered by the Mafia, and charged four people with the crime.
"As of this afternoon, I can confirm we are currently actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Calvi's death in 1982," a spokesman for the City of London Police said on Monday.
