Amnesty calls for Ottawa to enforce international law
Ottawa has to rise above the “turbulent times” caused by the war against terrorism by demonstrating its fundamental commitment to human rights and personal freedoms, Amnesty International said Thursday.

The organization specifically called for Ottawa to prosecute some war-crimes suspects who would otherwise be deported, to help victims of foreign abuse sue for compensation in Canadian courts, to do more to protect victims of the sex-trafficking business and to help stem the flow of so-called “blood diamonds.”

In its annual report on Canada, issued Thursday, the group warns that only by working to protect universal human rights can Canada stand credibly before the world.
