D.C. Police Lose Track Of Thousands Of Guns
WASHINGTON -- D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said authorities have lost track of where thousands of registered handguns are located.

There are about 41,000 handguns registered in the city. Of those, 36,000 are owned by residents who registered the weapons before Washington's gun ban took effect in 1976.

Lanier told WTOP-FM police don't know whether those pre-gun ban era guns are still in the city. She said gun owners were supposed to notify authorities if they were moving or if they no longer owned the gun. But she said many people didn't do so.

Also, there has been no audit. Lanier said that will become easier once the department's current paper records are upgraded onto an automated system....

1. So have 5000 been registered since the ban was overturned?
Or were 5000 registered while the ban was in effect?

2. Since the 'ban' didn't apply to LEOs I would assume that the
other 5000 are officially sanctioned.

6. I really doubt that LEOs had to register their weapons
In most other areas with restrictive gun laws like NYC and Cook County Illinois the police are almost always exempt from the ban that the general public lives under. That includes things like normal size magazines, un-neutered rifles and shotguns, and concealed carry. A huge double standard.

3. Zero have been registered since the ban was overturned
I suspect the 5,000 were registered by "special" people who were given permission to buy them during the ban. People who are more equal than others.

5. The other 5,000 were registered during the ban
I bet most of them were registered by and to politicians and "connected" people like Josh Sugarmann, the only FFL in all of D.C. and head of the VPC. The hypocrisy never ends.

7. IMO Chief Cathy L. Lanier should send her SWAT with no-knock warrants, preceded by concussion

grenades, at 4 am to find out where the handguns are located.

It’s almost certain some D.C. law was broken and if SWAT finds one molecule of illegal drugs, D.C. can seize all assets under asset forfeiture laws.

Of course some handgun owners will be prominent citizens and politicians but you can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs.
