Advocates of Gun Rights Are Poised for a Victory
WASHINGTON — Advocates of gun rights are poised to win a Congressional victory that eluded them under a Republican president.

To the frustration and discouragement of many Democrats, House and Senate lawmakers and aides say it now appears likely that President Obama will this week sign into law a provision allowing visitors to national parks and refuges to carry loaded and concealed weapons.

The White House is lukewarm at best on the gun provision, which was added to a popular measure imposing new rules on credit card companies. But the Democrats who now control both Congress and the White House appear ready to allow it to survive rather than derail a consumer-friendly credit card measure that Mr. Obama is eager to sign as Congress heads off for a Memorial Day recess.

“Timing is everything in politics,” said Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma and the champion of the gun proposal.

A majority of Democrats in the House and Senate still typically come down on the side of gun control. But the fact that they have been outmaneuvered by Republicans on gun issues is rooted in the fact that recently swollen Democratic ranks include senators and House members who represent Western states and more rural areas where gun ownership is popular and deemed sacrosanct.

4. So in your world no minorities ever own or carry guns, huh?
Hmmm, sounds a lot like Jesse Helms and George Wallace's ideal world too.

Nice company you keep.

My local range is pretty integrated. Last month I taught a 15 year old African-American, that was there with his grandfather and grandmother, to shoot my muzzleloader. He was at the next shooting station and was obviously curious. He loved it.

His grandfather referred to the gun as "a piece of history" and talked to him about the battles of the civil war where guns like that were used.

I guess that family was just stupid and didn't know they weren't supposed to be there and enjoy the shooting sports, since we're all racists. Does that make them "Black Gun Nuts" in your fantasy world?

I'll be sure and refer them to your posts to learn the way they are supposed to think. But don't hold your breath, they were having way too much fun to pay attention to a tiny and still shrinking group of malcontents.

Your posts are unimaginative, predictable ... oh, and wrong.

6. Do you have a stack of the same record..
.. cause if not, you've worn out the groove on that one.

Do you have a string in the back of your neck that when pulled causes you to regurgitate that line on command?

The expansion of concealed carry and relaxation of where one can carry has been going on for 25+ years- long before Obama was president, so it's getting a little old.

7. Do only white people go to National Parks?
I fail to see what is racist about this bill.

It allows people with Concealed Carry Permits and who's states allow it to carry Concealed Weapons in National Parks. It applies equally to people of all races.

17. this bill must really make you upset to say such a ridiculous thing

I don't like that it was an unrelated amendment to the credit regulation bill, but I'm happy to see it progressing into law.

2. People who hate the idea of guns in parks are just like those who don't want gay people in
the military. They won't or can't admit they are already there. Does anybody seriously believe nobody brings guns into Yellowstone now?
:eyes:

5. On another thread, a DUer commented that he didn't know it was illegal...
And that he'd always taken his pistol when he went camping in national parks during motorcycle trips.

3. Hooray!
I suspect this is done more out of fear than admiration, but it is great to see the Democratic party defuse this wedge issue.

15. Pro-gun provision passes House, 279-147
The House's passage of the bill came after an unrelated amendment allowing visitors to national parks to carry guns passed on a separate vote of 279-147. This morning, White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said Obama would sign the legislation even if the amendment, introduced by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), were included.
